About the Role
Join Downer's Transport and Infrastructure team as a Vegetation Control Operator based in Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand. Key Responsibilities
The role involves overseeing roadside vegetation and noxious weed management within the Foveaux roading network. This includes applying agrichemicals in line with contract specifications and environmental standards, operating spray equipment, correctly identifying plant species, and selecting suitable herbicides. Additional duties include performing cyclical maintenance such as road inspections, minor repairs, trimming vegetation, controlling aquatic weeds, and responding to emergencies. The position requires independent work across the network, upkeep of plant and equipment, operational reporting, and contributing to safer, accessible roads for the community.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Hold a current Full Class 2 Driver Licence.
- Possess a Growsafe Certificate and/or experience in herbicide application and safe agrichemical handling.
- Ability to identify vegetation species and appropriately apply treatment methods.
- Background in road maintenance, vegetation management, or similar outdoor operational roles.
- Strong adherence to health, safety, and environmental best practices.
- Effective communication, record-keeping, and reporting capabilities.
- Capable of working independently with initiative to manage daily tasks.
- Experience using chainsaws, hedge trimmers, or vegetation control tools is beneficial.
- National Certificate in Agrichemical Application or willingness to pursue it is highly valued.
- Availability to respond to emergencies and out-of-hours callouts.
