Utility Locator

Job Overview

The Utility Locator is tasked with identifying and marking underground utilities to facilitate safe excavation and construction processes. This position involves using specialized locating equipment, analyzing maps and work orders to accurately trace underground infrastructure. The role is critical in preventing damage to utilities, ensuring public safety, and supporting field operations by delivering accurate and timely utility locating services.

Primary Responsibilities

• Conduct underground utility locates following company policies, state regulations, and utility standards.
• Interpret maps, prints, GIS records, and work orders to establish utility locations and paths.
• Utilize locating devices such as transmitters, receivers, and toners to precisely mark subterranean utilities.
• Record all locating work through sketches, written notes, photographs, GPS data, and completed work orders.
• Handle routine tickets, emergency locate requests, urgent projects, and re-marks with promptness.
• Communicate effectively with contractors, property owners, utility companies, and internal personnel.
• Maintain responsibility for the upkeep of all equipment, tools, and company vehicles to ensure operational readiness.
• Perform all tasks safely and in compliance with OSHA, 811 standards, and state One-Call regulations.
• Immediately report any mis-markings, potential hazards, service issues, or risk of damage.
• Assist colleagues and support field operations as required.
• Carry out additional duties or special projects as assigned.

Key Performance Metrics

• Accuracy and quality of locates as measured by audit scores.
• Achievement of zero preventable utility damage incidents.
• Completion rate and timeliness of ticket responses.
• Strict adherence to safety protocols and maintaining an incident-free record.
• Precise documentation including photographs, notes, and mapping validation.
• Positive feedback from customers and contractors.

Qualifications and Requirements

• High school diploma or GED is mandatory.
• Prior experience in utility locating, construction, telecommunications, gas, water, or electrical sectors preferred.
• Familiarity with One-Call systems, 811 regulations, and underground utility grids is advantageous.
• Possession of a valid driver's license.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

• Regular work outdoors under varying weather conditions.
• Exposure to construction sites, traffic, and moving machinery.
• Work conducted on both private and public rights-of-way.
• Occasional requirement to respond to emergency or after-hours locate requests.
• Frequent interaction with contractors, homeowners, utility representatives, project managers, field supervisors, and internal teams.
• Capability to stand, walk, bend for extended periods, and handle physical tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to navigate trenches, confined spaces, and irregular terrain.
• Manual dexterity and good visual acuity.

Safety Responsibilities

This role is safety-sensitive and demands the employee to prioritize their own safety and that of others. Duties must be performed abiding by all safety protocols, company policies, and client requirements, including correct use of personal protective equipment, safe operation of vehicles and equipment, maintaining valid certifications, participating in safety trainings, and reporting unsafe conditions. Compliance with drug and alcohol screening is required. Non-adherence to safety standards may result in disciplinary action or termination.
