Utility Locator

Role Overview

The Utility Locator is tasked with identifying and marking underground utilities to facilitate safe excavation and construction. Utilizing specialized locating tools, maps, and work orders, this position ensures accurate detection of underground infrastructures to prevent damage and uphold safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct underground utility locates adhering to company, state, and utility regulations.
• Interpret maps, prints, GIS records, and work orders to establish utility routes.
• Operate locating devices such as transmitters, receivers, and toners to precisely mark utility lines.
• Record all locating activities including sketches, notes, photographs, GPS data, and completed work orders.
• Handle routine, emergency, high-priority, and re-mark locate requests effectively.
• Communicate proficiently with contractors, homeowners, utility providers, and internal personnel.
• Maintain proper functioning of equipment, tools, and vehicles used on the job.
• Conduct all work safely, complying strictly with OSHA, 811 guidelines, and state One-Call requirements.
• Promptly report any misidentifications, potential damages, safety concerns, or service issues.
• Support colleagues and field operations as necessary and perform assigned special projects.

Performance Indicators

• Accuracy scores and quality audits of utility locates.
• Zero preventable utility damages.
• Completion rate and punctuality of ticket handling.
• Strict adherence to safety protocols with no incidents.
• Accuracy in documentation including photos, notes, and mapping confirmation.
• Positive feedback from customers and contractors.

Candidate Requirements

• Minimum education: High school diploma or GED.
• Preferred experience in utility locating, construction, telecommunications, gas, water, or electrical sectors.
• Familiarity with One-Call systems, 811 regulations, and underground utility layouts is advantageous.
• Possession of a valid driver's license.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

• Frequent outdoor work under variable weather conditions.
• Exposure to construction zones, traffic, and operating machinery.
• Works on both private and public rights-of-way.
• Potential for emergency or overtime locate requests.
• Interactions with contractors, homeowners, utility firms, project managers, and supervisors.
• Physical ability to stand, walk, bend extensively, lift up to 50 pounds, maneuver in trenches and uneven terrain, and operate necessary hand tools and locator equipment.
• Visual and manual dexterity required for equipment operation.
