Utility Locator

Role Overview

The Utility Locator is tasked with accurately identifying and marking underground utility lines to support safe excavation and construction activities. Using specialized locating equipment, maps, and work orders, this role ensures precision in detecting underground utilities to prevent damage, uphold safety standards, and aid field operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct underground utility locates adhering to company policies and relevant state and utility standards.
• Interpret various documents such as maps, blueprints, GIS records, and work directives to trace utility paths.
• Operate locating devices including transmitters, receivers, and toners to mark underground infrastructure accurately.
• Maintain detailed records of locate operations through sketches, notes, photographs, GPS data, and completed work orders.
• Handle routine and emergency locate requests, high-priority assignments, and utility re-marks.
• Maintain effective communication with contractors, homeowners, utility service providers, and internal teams.
• Ensure upkeep and maintenance of tools, equipment, and company vehicles to guarantee operational readiness.
• Follow all safety protocols in line with OSHA, 811 regulations, and state One-Call guidelines to perform work safely.
• Immediately notify relevant parties about any misidentifications, risks of damage, safety threats, or potential service disruptions.
• Collaborate with team members and support field operations as required.
• Execute additional tasks or special projects as assigned by supervisors.

Performance Indicators

• Accuracy and quality audit scores for utility location.
• Achieving zero preventable utility damages.
• Completion rates and timeliness of locating tickets.
• Adherence to safety standards and maintaining an incident-free record.
• Thoroughness and precision in documentation, including photos, notes, and mapping verification.
• Customer and contractor satisfaction outcomes.

Candidate Requirements

• Must have a high school diploma or GED.
• Previous experience in utility locating or related fields such as construction, telecommunications, gas, water, or electrical industries is preferred.
• Familiarity with One-Call systems, 811 regulations, and underground utility infrastructure is advantageous.
• Possession of a valid driver's license is mandatory.

Work Environment & Conditions

• Regular outdoor work exposed to varying weather conditions.
• Presence in construction zones, traffic areas, and around moving machinery.
• Work on both private and public rights-of-way.
• Occasional emergency or after-hours locate assignments.
• Interaction with contractors, utility companies, homeowners, project managers, field supervisors, and internal personnel.

Essential Qualities for Success

• Accuracy and compliance in performing locates that minimize digging damages.
• Strict observance of safety guidelines and use of personal protective equipment in hazardous environments.
• Effective communication skills paired with meticulous and accurate documentation.

Physical Demands

• Capability to stand, walk, and bend for extended durations.
• Ability to lift and transport weights up to 50 pounds.
• Comfort working in trenches, confined spaces, or uneven terrain.
• Proficiency in handling hand tools and locating equipment.
• Endurance to walk long distances throughout the day.
• Good visual acuity and manual dexterity.

Safety Considerations

This position is safety-sensitive. Employees must comply fully with all safety protocols, regulations, and company policies including the proper use of PPE, safe operation of vehicles and equipment, maintaining certifications and licenses, participating in safety training, and reporting unsafe conditions. Passing drug and alcohol screening and maintaining physical ability to perform job functions safely are required. Non-compliance may lead to disciplinary action, including termination.
