Role Overview

We have an opening for an Umpire to support a distinct US Navy initiative on Diego Garcia Island. The primary responsibility is to uphold the fairness of games by enforcing regulations, delivering prompt and precise decisions, and safeguarding the sport's integrity.

Responsibilities

• Officiate games including softball, baseball, or comparable recreational leagues following established rules and guidelines.
• Uphold fair competition by enforcing game rules and maintaining control during gameplay.
• Make correct and swift rulings on game plays, pitches, and player conduct.
• Conduct inspections of playing fields, equipment, and player gear to guarantee safety and compliance before games start.
• Keep thorough records such as game logs, scorecards, and incident reports as required.
• Engage in clear communication with players, coaches, and staff to settle disputes and clarify rules.
• Assist with scheduling, field preparation, and coordinating league events when needed.
• Encourage sportsmanship, participant safety, and a positive environment throughout all events.
• Perform additional duties aligned with the role as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Between 1 and 3 years of experience officiating softball, baseball, or similar sports.
• High school diploma or its equivalent.
• Certification or formal training as a sports official or umpire.
• Capability to successfully complete and maintain mandatory training and certifications including Customer Service, CPR, First Aid, AED, and local emergency protocols with annual renewals.
• Possession of a valid passport with a minimum of one year validity beyond date of hire and eligibility to travel internationally.
• Ability to obtain country-specific visas per US Department of State Foreign Clearance guidance.
• Pass necessary medical evaluations and sustain health requirements throughout deployment.
• Ability to acquire and uphold facility credentials and necessary authorizations.
• Proficiency in reading, speaking, and understanding English sufficiently to fulfill contract duties and comply with emergency procedures on installation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience working in austere Overseas Continental United States (OCONUS) environments with multinational teams.
• Strong time management, organizational, and customer service skills.
• Deep understanding of sport rules, officiating procedures, and conflict resolution methods.
• Valid driver’s license recognized in applicable country.

Working Environment

This assignment is based in Diego Garcia within the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), a remote site supporting U.S. Government operations. Work settings include office, industrial, warehouse, port, airfield, and outdoor locations with potential exposures to hot weather, humidity, inclement conditions, noise, dust, and uneven terrain. Scheduling may involve evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended working hours as operationally necessary.

Physical Requirements

The position involves extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, stair climbing, and regular lifting up to 25 pounds (and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds). The role demands the ability to function in both indoor and outdoor environments and must meet all medical, security, and deployment requirements related to stationed overseas.
