Role Overview
The Switchperson is responsible for transporting trailers within a distribution center, moving them between shipping and receiving areas to facilitate merchandise loading and unloading. This role involves applying seals to loaded trailers for secure departure, maintaining records on trailer movements, and completing yard reports.
Responsibilities
- Operate railcar switching activities efficiently and safely.
- Perform assigned tank car repairs.
- Comply with health and safety standards, including adherence to the Responsible Care policy.
- Carry out additional duties as assigned.
Skills and Competencies
- Proficient use of Track mobile equipment.
- Skilled and safe operation of various shop tools and machinery including electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic tools, cranes, shears, and hand tools.
- Training and experience with WHMIS related to hazardous commodity handling.
- Comfortable working in challenging conditions such as heights, confined spaces, with noisy machinery, and exposure to fumes.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member.
- Capable of performing tasks requiring moderate to heavy physical exertion.
Work Schedule and Compensation
The position is permanent on the afternoon shift, running five days per week from Monday to Friday, 3:30 p.m. to midnight, including a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. The base wage is $39.24 per hour with an additional $1.40 per hour night shift premium.
