Job description

Overview

The Salvation Army Australia, a respected Christian charity dedicated to transforming lives, seeks a compassionate Support Worker to join their Alice Springs Hub. This full-time, permanent position operates under SCHADS Level 3 and focuses on assisting individuals facing homelessness, financial difficulties, substance challenges, mental health issues, or social isolation.

Role Purpose and Impact

The Alice Springs Hub serves as a safe and welcoming environment, offering dignity and support to vulnerable community members. As a Support Worker, you will be integral to this mission by greeting participants warmly, delivering practical assistance, and facilitating connections to critical services. Collaborating closely with Case Managers, your role involves providing brief interventions, individual support, and facilitating activities that promote wellbeing, routine, and social engagement.

You will also contribute to maintaining a clean, calm, and respectful atmosphere by assisting with light meal preparation and general upkeep. Building meaningful relationships, especially with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who may have experienced trauma or disconnection, is a cornerstone of this role, demanding cultural sensitivity and deep listening.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support Case Managers in working alongside participants with complex life situations.
  • Foster a safe, welcoming, and calm environment within the Hub.
  • Provide brief interventions and one-on-one support during critical times.
  • Lead simple wellbeing and social connection activities.
  • Assist participants in accessing services, identification, income pathways, and essential supports.
  • Collaborate with internal programs, external providers, and community partners to ensure coordinated care.
  • Adhere to Workplace Health and Safety practices including conflict resolution and anti-discrimination.
  • Promote a positive and supportive team culture through participation in meetings and training.
  • Help maintain a culturally respectful and clean environment during peak periods.

Candidate Profile

  • Experience in homelessness services, crisis intervention, community-based case work, or related social services.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and passionate about assisting others.
  • Experience supporting individuals from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with local Aboriginal communities and cultures.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for relationship building.
  • Respectful engagement with people from varied backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated reliability, integrity, and alignment with The Salvation Army’s values.
  • Certificate IV in Community Services is desirable.
  • Possession of an NT Working with Children Check is required.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Hourly rate between $44.54 and $47.76 plus superannuation, aligned with experience and qualifications.
  • SCHADS Level 3 classification with up to 10% above-award conditions.
  • Remote Area Housing Benefit up to $31,800 tax-free, plus a tax-free Entertainment Benefit of up to $2,650.
  • Generous parental leave of 12 weeks for primary carers.
  • Purchased Leave Scheme permitting up to 8 extra weeks of leave, and 5 paid days to participate in other programs.
  • Flexible working arrangements to support work-life balance.
  • Access to Employee Assistance Programs and wellbeing initiatives.
  • Ongoing professional training and development opportunities.
  • A career that offers real community impact and personal fulfillment.
