About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Payroll Officer to independently manage the comprehensive payroll function for a well-established company located in Smithfield, NSW. This position offers the chance to take full ownership of payroll processes for over 300 staff members spanning manufacturing, distribution, and corporate sectors. Reporting directly to the Financial Controller, you will be integral in driving payroll accuracy and compliance while contributing to significant payroll system projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Process both weekly and monthly payroll accurately for a workforce exceeding 300 employees.
- Administer overtime, allowances, shift penalties, deductions, and payroll-related adjustments.
- Validate timesheets, attendance data, and leave submissions thoroughly.
- Handle payroll actions such as onboarding, terminations, redundancies, salary changes, and other employee alterations.
- Maintain meticulous employee payroll records and master payroll data.
- Oversee leave accruals, including annual, personal, long service, and parental leave.
- Prepare and submit payroll tax returns, PAYG withholding, superannuation payments, and statutory reports.
- Ensure compliance with Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting standards.
- Perform monthly and annual payroll reconciliations and closing tasks.
- Generate detailed reporting on payroll, labour costs, leave, and headcount.
- Assist in payroll-related audits and compliance assessments.
- Address employee and management payroll inquiries promptly and professionally.
- Provide expert guidance on tax legislation, leave policies, superannuation, and payroll procedures.
- Ensure payroll practices comply with Awards, Enterprise Agreements, Fair Work laws, and relevant payroll regulations.
- Engage in payroll system upgrades, testing, and continuous improvement efforts.
- Support integration projects between payroll and HRIS systems.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will have prior experience managing a standalone payroll function with full accountability. Comfort with independent decision-making and multitasking is essential. A strong grasp of technical payroll knowledge, including legislation, taxation, payroll tax, superannuation, and compliance reporting, is required.
Experience in a manufacturing or similar blue-collar environment with complex payroll components such as shift penalties and allowances is highly valued. Advanced Excel skills including proficiency with VLOOKUPs and Pivot Tables are expected. Prior handling of payroll for 300+ employees is mandatory. Familiarity with MYOB PayGlobal, payroll system integrations, and payroll transformation initiatives will be highly advantageous.
