Role Overview

As a Staff Software Engineer on the API Platform team, you'll be responsible for maintaining and enhancing core infrastructure that enables backend services at Canva to communicate effectively and reliably. Your role includes technical ownership of critical systems, leading migrations, and extending platform support for various languages and frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

• Engineer and improve core backend infrastructure facilitating service communication across Canva.
• Lead a significant migration project to evolve backend service communication methods in close collaboration with engineering teams and leadership.
• Expand platform capabilities to support additional programming languages and frameworks, empowering teams to build natively.
• Ensure high reliability, performance, and correctness of critical infrastructure components.
• Mentor fellow engineers and contribute to raising the overall technical standards of the team.

Ideal Candidate Profile

• Experience building and maintaining infrastructure critical to other engineering teams, especially in API gateways, RPC, or service mesh technologies at scale with high traffic volumes.
• Demonstrated ability to manage systems where reliability and correctness are paramount, prioritizing thoughtful architectural trade-offs over expedient fixes.
• Proven track record of driving technical initiatives across multiple teams and communicating effectively with both engineers and platform consumers.
• Strong ownership mindset motivated by making platform improvements that empower others.
• Several years managing large-scale, high-transaction production systems in commercial environments, preferably with experience across multiple programming languages.

Team Background

The team is responsible for the foundational infrastructure that allows other engineering teams at Canva to work swiftly and securely, managing service communication, traffic routing, and supporting flexible language choices.
