Staff Data Scientist

The Personalization team strives to deeply understand our customers to make their shopping experience seamless, fast, and individually tailored, whether online or in-store, impacting a global consumer base while supporting Walmart associates with AI-driven solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and apply advanced statistical models including deep neural networks, Bayesian techniques, and other machine learning methods tailored for large-scale applications.
• Develop scalable, efficient models capable of operating at Walmart's global scale.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with business units, engineers, and scientists to deliver impactful solutions for complex business challenges.
• Define metrics that measure model performance and continuously evaluate business impact over time.
• Communicate analytical insights and recommendations clearly and effectively to business stakeholders to guide strategy and planning.
• Drive ongoing improvements in data science and machine learning by adhering to industry best practices and extending capabilities through research.
• Embed data science solutions into existing business workflows and recommend best practices for the application of machine learning in retail settings.
• Advise stakeholders on algorithm-based solutions, providing thought leadership to evolve these into actionable business initiatives.
• Represent Walmart at external knowledge-sharing events such as research conferences and technical forums.
• Promote a culture of ethics, integrity, and adherence to company policies.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree with over 9 years, Masters with over 8 years, or PhD with more than 7 years of relevant data science or analytics experience.
• Proficient in machine learning techniques including supervised and unsupervised learning such as NLP, classification, data/text mining, multi-modal modeling, neural networks, and deep learning.
• Experience with embedding generation, vector databases, managed large language model (LLM) gateways, retrieval-augmented generation agents, prompt engineering, fine-tuning, and monitoring.
• Strong programming skills in Python and PySpark, with solid experience deploying models on Google Cloud Platform.
• Hands-on experience working with big data platforms at scale.
