Staff Data Scientist - Machine Learning Engineering

About the Team

The Marketplace team serves as the gateway for domestic and international third-party sellers, facilitating end-to-end seller onboarding, catalog management, order fulfillment, and returns and refunds. The team focuses on designing, developing, and operating large-scale distributed systems using state-of-the-art technologies spanning web/mobile, cloud computing, big data, and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML). Collaboration across multiple teams is key to delivering scalable and robust technical solutions.

Job Responsibilities

• Design and deliver scalable, end-to-end data science solutions integrated into data products.
• Collaborate closely with data engineers and analysts to develop ML and statistical workflows supporting data quality and continuous monitoring.
• Address complex business challenges by applying advanced machine learning algorithms and sophisticated statistical models to large datasets.
• Manage the entire MLOps lifecycle including data monitoring, code refactoring for data science, and establishing reliable model monitoring for lifecycle management.
• Provide thought leadership by consulting product and business stakeholders to successfully prototype, scale, and deploy comprehensive machine learning solutions.
• Stay informed on industry best practices and lead innovation by extending current developments in machine learning research and applications.
• Champion company policies, procedures, mission, values, and uphold high ethical standards.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Strong knowledge of foundational machine learning and statistical principles.
• Experience implementing web service standards and protocols such as REST and gRPC.
• Proven ability to architect solutions with Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) practices in mind.
• Familiarity with distributed in-memory computing platforms.
• Extensive experience using state-of-the-art supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms on real-world datasets.
• Proficiency in Python programming and development of Python packages.
• Expertise in Big Data ecosystems including Hadoop, Spark, and MapReduce, with strong SQL/Hive skills and ability to utilize Spark effectively.
• Experience collaborating with data scientists to refactor data science code and develop ML solutions suitable for production deployment.
• Track record of full-stack data science responsibility, taking solutions from concept to production environment.
• Skilled in implementing metrics instrumentation in software components to support real-time troubleshooting and performance monitoring.
• Preferred educational background includes degrees in Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or closely related fields.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to simplify complex ideas for diverse audiences.
• Team player exhibiting strong work ethics.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field plus 4 years of experience in analytics.
• OR Master’s degree in the above fields plus 2 years of analytics experience.
• OR 6 years’ professional experience in analytics or related domains.
