About the Role
We are partnering with a leading product company seeking a seasoned Staff Engineer to lead technically across their expanding capabilities in machine learning (ML), MLOps, and generative AI. This permanent position based in Melbourne involves hybrid onsite work and does not include people management responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Developing and enhancing MLOps infrastructure including feature stores, full model lifecycle management, drift detection mechanisms, and monitoring for observability.
- Architecting and building production-grade generative AI applications, large language model (LLM) pipelines, autonomic AI agent workflows, and related guardrails.
- Establishing best engineering practices and influencing the strategic technical roadmap in ML and AI domains.
- Providing expert technical guidance and leadership to senior and principal engineers within multiple teams.
- Contributing hands-on to AI products currently delivering measurable benefits to both customer experiences and internal process improvements.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will have a background either in software engineering with substantial ML/AI expertise or in data science/ML with progression into production-level engineering.
- Experience delivering production ML systems and MLOps platforms.
- Expertise in generative AI, LLM workflows, and building AI agent solutions.
- Strong foundation in software engineering principles.
- Proficiency in model monitoring, observability, and lifecycle governance.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Databricks, AWS, SageMaker, Snowflake, and Azure or similar environments.
- Ability to lead technically while maintaining hands-on involvement with engineering tasks.
Technology Environment
The primary tools used include Databricks and AWS, though precise familiarity with every tool is not mandatory. A solid grasp of engineering and ML/AI fundamentals is far more critical.
Opportunity
This is an excellent opportunity for an individual who desires to stay deeply technical while owning the design and delivery of innovative ML and AI solutions.
