The Staff Backend Engineer role in AI Engineering focuses on GitLab's Duo Agent Platform (DAP), specifically the Repository Flows team responsible for onboarding customers and orchestrating autonomous and scheduled agents that operate on customer repositories.

Key Responsibilities

• Define and steer the technical vision for the DAP Repository Flows team, shaping system architecture for onboarding and repository flows.
• Lead the development of autonomous and scheduled agent functionalities that manage customer codebases leveraging the Duo Agent Platform.
• Enhance the onboarding experience to ensure customers can efficiently configure projects and become productive swiftly.
• Collaborate cross-functionally within the DAP organization to align on interfaces, reuse patterns, and platform services.
• Mentor fellow engineers, conduct design and code reviews, and elevate the overall engineering standards.
• Tackle the most challenging technical issues, implementing robust solutions to prevent recurring problems.
• Promote a culture valuing autonomy, ownership, high context communication, and asynchronous collaboration.

Candidate Profile

• Extensive hands-on experience with Ruby and Ruby on Rails in production environments.
• Proven background integrating large language models (LLMs) into products, focusing on product implementation rather than model training.
• Experience designing and building autonomous or semi-autonomous agent systems that act on behalf of users.
• History of creating and managing complex, large-scale systems and guiding engineering direction across teams.
• Excellent written communication skills suited for a distributed, asynchronous working environment.
• Display the judgment and leadership expected of a staff-level engineer, including setting strategic direction and enhancing team impact.

Salary and Benefits

The stated salary range for U.S. residents spans $152,800 to $259,200 USD annually. Compensation is adjusted according to experience, education, skills, and location. The base salary excludes bonuses, equity, and benefits.
