Specialist - Maintenance Engineer for Open Pit Workshop

Our Macraes Open Pit Workshop seeks a technically proficient Specialist Engineer to lead and enhance engineering projects and repair operations focused on mobile mining equipment, ensuring high-quality maintenance and management.

Primary Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee engineering staff to ensure a strong adherence to safety standards and quality workmanship.
• Maintain and document optimal designs for wear and special parts through the company’s SharePoint system.
• Develop thorough and precise work scopes for repairs and refurbishment involving wear-and-tear and specialized components.
• Conduct audits and quality controls on regular inspections, monitor ground engaging tooling conditions, and provide expert feedback on tooling and wear materials.
• Uphold excellent cleanliness and orderliness in the engineering workshop, associated facilities, plant, and company vehicles.
• Identify and requisition necessary materials and resources to support work execution while managing work orders under the established work management system.
• Accurately log usage of components and other resources on job cards tied to work orders.
• Perform general welding repairs and light fabrication tasks on mining machinery and other equipment as needed.
• Monitor wear rates on buckets, blades, and trays to anticipate needed repairs or replacements effectively.
• Prepare engineer reports and maintenance assessments during preventive maintenance, coordinating with planners to ensure timely execution of repair scopes.
• Participate in weekly planning meetings to supply relevant engineering information and resource updates.
• Plan, evaluate, and supervise engineering projects carried out by OceanaGold boilermakers and external contractors.
• Ensure maintenance and inspections of site infrastructure, tooling, and workshop equipment are executed according to plan and rectify any deficiencies found.
• Adhere to and align actions with the AMF AM10 workflow management protocols.

Qualifications and Experience

• Possess a National Certificate in Engineering Fabrication (Level 4) or an equivalent qualification.
• Have a minimum of five years’ experience working in open pit mining environments.
• Desirable certifications include first aid, forklift operation, overhead crane operation, rigging and slinging, and working at height per New Zealand standards (not compulsory).
• Hold a valid, clean driver's license with proven confidence driving manual vehicles on rough terrain.
• Must have an unrestricted New Zealand Working Visa.
• Solid background in repair and maintenance of heavy mining machinery in open pit conditions, including significant work on excavator bucket rebuilds, dump truck tray wear packages, blade refurbishments, and ground engaging tool maintenance.
• Experienced in mentoring and coaching engineering personnel and contractors.
• Proficient in general fabrication and design techniques, with strong computer literacy.
• Familiarity with using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to generate tasks, work orders, and requisition materials.

Additional Information

• Work location: Macraes mine, East Otago, New Zealand.
• Roster: 9-day fortnight with a schedule of five days on, two off, four on, and three off, working 7:00am to 4:30pm. This allows for a long weekend every other week.
