Role Summary

Reporting directly to the Team Lead of Software Engineering, the Software Engineer II independently executes their expertise while collaborating closely with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver exceptional customer experiences. This role involves solving moderately complex technical challenges, delivering high-quality software, and beginning to offer technical mentorship to junior colleagues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design end-to-end moderately complex software applications or components independently.
  • Support the architectural design of components within larger software systems, detailing user and system interfaces.
  • Develop multiple design perspectives addressing stakeholder needs, functional/non-functional requirements, and security considerations.
  • Develop, test, document, and refactor moderately complex code and scripts in alignment with accepted standards.
  • Implement agreed-upon methodologies, tools, design patterns, and security protocols to ensure robust engineering outcomes.
  • Track development progress, proactively identify software issues, and propose feasible solutions.
  • Contribute to release planning, scheduling, and coordination in partnership with relevant teams according to established procedures.
  • Engage in testing and quality assurance to verify that releases meet quality benchmarks.
  • Document release outcomes and communicate results effectively to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate in peer reviews and support evaluation of alternative design and implementation options.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum of four years of professional experience in software engineering roles.
  • Practical knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps practices.
  • Capacity to work under general supervision with autonomy to plan tasks and address complex issues effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to engage with colleagues, customers, and partners, ensuring understanding of user needs and contributing fully to team objectives.
  • Competency in handling diverse and challenging tasks, troubleshooting methodically, and fostering innovative problem-solving approaches.
  • Effective communication abilities with proficiency in appropriate technical methods and digital tools.
  • Self-driven learner with adherence to security, privacy, and ethical standards.
  • Sound industry knowledge and comprehension of business contexts relevant to the domain.
  • Capability to effectively apply and transfer knowledge as well as assimilate new information rapidly.

Additional Information

This position is based primarily in our Christchurch office where employees work onsite three days a week. Occasionally, the role requires participation in Tier 3 after-hours support.
