Job description

About Gridsight and the Flex Product

Gridsight is an expanding startup focused on accelerating worldwide electrification and decarbonisation through CleanTech innovation. Our vertical SaaS platform helps electricity utilities modernise grid operations by enabling transformative flexibility features such as dynamic operating envelopes and flexible interconnections. Backed by Series A funding from Airtree Ventures, Energy Transition Ventures, and Area VC, we are positioned for rapid expansion. Flex is our Distributed Energy Resource (DER) orchestration product supporting dynamic operating envelopes, emergency backstop, flexible exports, and battery orchestration. It actively manages millions of solar systems, batteries, and electric vehicles in near real-time, interfacing closely with power flow and optimisation engines developed by our grid modelling team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop data pipelines and services that reliably handle large volumes of DER telemetry, metering, and network data.
  • Create integrations to facilitate bidirectional data flow between Flex and utility operational platforms, both importing data and exporting orchestration responses.
  • Implement observability solutions including data quality checks, metrics, logging, and alerting to monitor pipeline and data feed status effectively in production.
  • Maintain and enhance data models that underpin dynamic operating envelopes, emergency backstop events, flexible exports, and battery orchestration features.
  • Streamline onboarding processes for new customers to ensure repeatable and efficient deployment rather than manual reinvention.
  • Collaborate with the grid modelling team to manage clean data exchanges between grid engines and the product platform.
  • Utilize AI-assisted development tools to expedite delivery timelines and elevate the output quality of a compact engineering team.
  • Contribute to a strong engineering culture by promoting high code standards, comprehensive testing, observability practices, and knowledge sharing among colleagues.

Candidate Requirements

  • Between 3 and 6+ years of professional experience in software and data engineering, with proven capability in deploying and operating production software systems.
  • Demonstrated experience designing cloud native applications, preferably on AWS; transferable skills with GCP or Azure are acceptable.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL, with solid software engineering fundamentals to build robust services and integrations beyond simple data pipelines.
  • Hands-on experience developing data-centric applications involving ingestion, transformation, orchestration, and related tools such as dbt, Airflow, or Dagster.
  • Skilled in handling complex, large-scale, and imperfect data from external sources, ensuring its reliability and usability.
  • Strong foundation in software engineering best practices including clean architecture, unit and integration testing, code reviews, and Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD).
  • Comfortable leveraging AI-powered development tools, such as agentic coding assistants or large language model-enhanced workflows to accelerate software creation.
  • Exhibit strong sense of ownership and initiative, independently driving concepts into functioning software without requiring constant oversight.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Experience with lakehouse architectures and open table formats like Iceberg, Delta Lake, or similar technologies, including familiarity with Databricks.
  • Background in event-driven software architecture and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.
  • Experience developing streaming or near-real-time data systems in a production environment.
  • Prior exposure to the energy sector or utilities technology, especially dealing with DER telemetry, smart meters, or SCADA data.

Employee Benefits and Work Arrangement

  • Competitive salary aligned with high performance expectations.
  • Meaningful equity ownership through Employee Stock Option Plan (ESOP).
  • Home working allowance of $2,500 and a $2,500 health and wellness stipend.
  • Bi-annual in-person working weeks and complimentary lunches on office days.
  • Flexible working model supporting fully remote, hybrid, or on-site presence with a modern headquarters in Sydney and satellite offices in Melbourne, Brisbane, and Hobart.
