The Just Walk Out technology revolutionizes retail shopping by eliminating the need for lines and checkouts. Using the Amazon Go app, customers can enter stores, pick items such as fresh meals and essentials, and leave without stopping to pay, as charges are automatically processed post-shopping. This experience is enabled by advanced computer vision, sensor fusion, and machine learning technologies.

Role Summary

The Software Development Manager will oversee the delivery of cross-functional efforts aimed at introducing new features and enhancing the Just Walk Out shopping experience. Managing a team of 6 to 10 software engineers, this leader will drive excellence in engineering quality and embed operational knowledge and best practices into all aspects of software development.

Key Responsibilities

• Foster a culture of high engineering standards and ownership for the program’s vision and execution.
• Lead the design and deployment of critical software capabilities that elevate customer experience and operational excellence.
• Manage the day-to-day activities of a software development team tasked with scaling and improving Just Walk Out technology.
• Approach complex business problems analytically, digging deep into data to identify root causes rather than superficial trends.
• Collaborate with product and program management to align software development with customer needs and business goals.

Team Insights

The Just Walk Out team is pioneering AWS’s checkout-free store technology applying computer vision, sensors, and AI. The technology is in use across various global venues, including stadiums, airports, campuses, and fulfillment centers. The team is scaling internationally and across verticals, incorporating large language models for shopper assistance and autonomously operating AI agents, alongside re-architecting platforms to comply with diverse regulations worldwide.

Qualifications

• At least 2 years of experience managing engineering teams.
• More than 7 years in engineering roles, including 8+ years leading multi-tier web services development.
• Strong expertise in software and hardware development lifecycle processes such as coding standards, code reviews, source control, build, testing, certification, and live site operations.
• Experience working closely with product or program management teams.
• Preferred: excelling in communication with stakeholders including users, technical teams, and senior leadership; hiring and mentoring software engineering teams; and designing scalable, reliable architectures.
