Overview
Join the expanding RDS Aurora Serverless Control Plane team responsible for pioneering reliable cloud-native database management that frees customers from traditional database administration. The control plane ensures exceptional availability and failover capabilities, handling the entire lifecycle of large-scale database clusters including creation, scaling, and failover orchestration. Amazon Aurora combines the scalability and speed of leading NoSQL databases with compatibility to relational databases like MySQL and PostgreSQL, managing petabytes of data and millions of queries per second. As a core AWS managed service, Aurora impacts numerous fast-growing enterprises worldwide.
Role Responsibilities
- Lead a core Control Plane segment focused on Aurora Serverless v2 and enterprise features, providing technical guidance and ownership.
- Collaborate within a diverse, highly skilled team environment, influencing team workflows, processes, and achieving organizational objectives.
- Mentor junior and intermediate engineers, offering challenging projects and coaching to foster their growth into key contributors.
- Partner with senior engineers on complex features of broad impact, ensuring quality delivery.
- Engage directly with customers to gather feedback and refine product vision alongside leadership and product management.
- Steer delivery of new customer-facing features as well as improvements to technical and operational efficiencies.
- Act as a steward for existing systems, driving necessary architectural changes to support scaling.
- Conduct people, project, and product management including setting team roadmap and liaising with support teams and other AWS leaders.
- Participate in manager on-call duties approximately once every three months, focusing on system reliability and proactive problem resolution.
- Oversee backlog prioritization and efficient team operations.
- Review and shape team design documents, ensuring high-quality standards.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Aurora Serverless, Aurora Storage, and Platform teams for customer developer experience enhancements.
Qualifications
- Strong understanding of software and hardware engineering lifecycles, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, builds, testing, certification, and live site operations.
- Management experience leading engineering teams and driving their development.
- Background in engineering multi-tier web services and working closely with product and program teams.
- Preferred experience includes communicating technical requirements and strategies to users, technical peers, and senior leadership.
- Experience in recruiting, mentoring, and enhancing software engineers’ effectiveness and skillsets.
