Software Development Manager - Alameda

Overview

Alameda is an advanced control plane service that supports over 14 AWS services, aiming to modernize and scale core AWS building blocks such as APIs, workflows, and telemetry. It enables developers to concentrate on delivering business value by eliminating the need to write foundational services, while providing secure and scalable runtime environments.

We seek a passionate leader to direct the development of these essential building blocks that underpin next-generation AWS services. This role entails managing a team throughout the full engineering lifecycle, from initial design to deployment, enhancing foundational systems that operate AWS services.

Role and Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a software engineering team in solving complex challenges and developing critical software solutions.
• Collaborate effectively with customers, organizational leaders, and cross-functional engineering teams.
• Drive technical strategy with comprehensive expertise across software development disciplines.
• Establish and enforce best practices across the software development lifecycle, including standards for coding, peer reviews, version control, builds, testing, and live operations.
• Make informed architectural decisions addressing large-scale system design considerations.
• Approach problem-solving holistically, considering the broader technological and business context.

Qualifications

• Five or more years managing engineering teams.
• At least seven years of experience working directly within engineering teams.
• Minimum three years of experience in system design or architecture, focusing on design patterns, reliability, and scale of both new and existing systems.
• Over eight years of leading multi-tier web service development initiatives.
• Proficient knowledge of software engineering methodologies covering the complete development lifecycle including coding standards, code review, source control, build processes, testing, certification, and operations.
• Experience partnering closely with product and program management functions.

Preferred Skills

• Experience engaging with users, technical teams, and senior leaders to gather requirements, articulate software features, design solutions, and influence product direction.
• Proven ability in recruiting, hiring, mentoring, and managing software engineers to enhance their capabilities and productivity.

The salary range for this role in Toronto, Canada is CAD 171,400 to 286,200 annually. Compensation packages may include sign-on bonuses and restricted stock units in addition to base salary.
