Team and Role

The Menu Personalization team curates the recipes displayed to millions of customers every week by managing recommender systems across global markets. This team brings together a diverse group of specialists including Data Scientists, Backend Engineers, and ML Engineers to develop solutions from experimentation to production that enhance customer experience and drive business growth. We emphasize empowering engineers to own customer issues and use AI to amplify their impact.

The Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer will take ownership of the ML systems supporting menu personalization, handling the entire stack from feature pipelines and training to model serving and infrastructure. This leadership position demands setting technical direction, operational excellence, and collaboration with multiple teams to influence the company's ML engineering standards and strategies for years to come.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the architectural and technical strategy for end-to-end ML systems in menu personalization—including pipelines, training, serving, experimentation, and infrastructure.
• Collaborate with Data Scientists to transition research models into production systems that adhere to strict latency, scalability, and monitoring requirements.
• Develop and advocate for personalized product roadmaps, substantiated by data and user feedback, in partnership with product and engineering leaders.
• Maintain and improve operational reliability by monitoring and refining deployed systems as part of an ongoing learning cycle.
• Elevate team quality through architectural reviews, mentorship, and exemplary ML engineering in production environments.
• Make platform-level decisions with long-term impact, influencing architectures and coding standards beyond the immediate team.
• Engage with peers company-wide to promote best practices and contribute to initiatives advancing ML and data engineering excellence across HelloFresh.

Required Qualifications

• Over eight years of experience designing and managing production-quality ML systems, exhibiting leadership at scale.
• Proven record of making durable architectural decisions with cross-team influence.
• Strong background in recommender systems or large-scale personalization preferred.
• Proficiency with relevant data and ML technologies including Python, Spark, Go, Kafka, and Kubernetes, encompassing pipelines, serving, and system observability.
• Strong statistical knowledge for designing valid experiments and discerning true model improvements versus misleading metrics.
• Skilled in diagnosing and resolving system issues under high load conditions to ensure robustness in production.
• Practical and regular use of advanced AI tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, and Copilot to enhance development workflows.
• Strong product intuition and ability to advocate for effective solutions tied directly to business value.
• Ownership mindset with commitment to completing projects thoroughly.

Work Arrangement

HelloFresh offers a flexible hybrid working model focused on employee choice and trust, providing both remote work options and in-office collaboration. Employees typically work a minimum of two days per week on-site, with most teams onsite between two and three days weekly.

Compensation
