Senior Software Engineer, Teamwork Graph Externalization

About the Role

We seek an experienced Senior Software Engineer who combines strong product sensibility with robust backend development expertise to lead the creation of Teamwork Graph externalization solutions. The team is responsible for the API framework that links Atlassian products and enables customers, developers, and AI agents to interact with the Teamwork Graph. This includes ownership of the Atlassian GraphQL Gateway and developing external API features for Teamwork Graph, spanning Model Context Protocol (MCP), CLI tools, direct APIs, and the underlying shared metering and monetization systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Product, Design, and engineering teams to define and refine Teamwork Graph externalization features tailored for developers, client applications, and AI agent integrations.
• Convert user requirements into practical technical designs, balancing usability, delivery timelines, reliability, security, and cost-efficiency.
• Guide the technical vision for the team, spotting opportunities to create shared functionalities and consistent user experiences across MCP, CLI, and direct APIs.
• Lead projects from issue identification and system design to implementation, deployment, and sustainable operational management.
• Develop APIs, backend services, and developer tools that enable effective use of Teamwork Graph in various customer scenarios and automated workflows.
• Design precise API contracts complemented by user-friendly error handling, thorough documentation, and integration examples to facilitate smooth adoption.
• Ensure services are scalable and robust, adhering to high standards of testing, availability, latency, security authorization, and observability.
• Leverage customer insights, experimental data, and production metrics to continuously enhance product quality and monitor adoption and usage patterns.
• Coordinate with other teams to resolve interdependencies, improve shared infrastructure, and deliver new features incrementally.
• Mentor fellow engineers via design critiques, code reviews, paired programming, and constructive feedback.
• Enhance team engineering processes, tooling, and documentation to improve service build and operational efficiency.
• Foster a collaborative culture where ideas are freely exchanged, assumptions are questioned, and accountability is embraced.

Qualifications

• At least 5 years of professional experience in software engineering focused on backend systems and application development.
• Proven track record of delivering products for customers or developers, with a keen understanding of how technical choices impact usability, adoption, and business value.
• Advanced programming proficiency with Kotlin, Java, or TypeScript, with a readiness to work across Kotlin and TypeScript codebases.
• Experience designing APIs and building distributed systems, including familiarity with databases, cloud infrastructure, and system performance optimization.
• Demonstrated ability to own complex projects from their design through release including responsibilities for testing, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
• Strong product insight, working closely with Product and Design teams to refine requirements, evaluate tradeoffs, and iteratively enhance solutions based on feedback and data.
• Capacity to navigate ambiguity, facilitate cross-team collaboration, and communicate technical decisions clearly.
• Experience mentoring developers and elevating code quality through thorough code reviews and improved engineering standards.

Preferred Skills

• Background building developer platforms, public APIs, SDKs, command line interfaces, or third-party integrations.
• Familiarity with MCP, AI agents, tool utilization, or applications leveraging enterprise context and retrieval techniques.
• Experience with Rust programming, particularly for performance-critical components like CLIs and developer tools.
• Understanding of evaluation techniques for AI or agentic products through offline testing, experiments, and production data assessment.
• Knowledge of GraphQL, API gateway architectures, multi-tenant SaaS environments, authentication and authorization practices, and API compatibility management.
• Insights into usage instrumentation, metering, pricing models based on usage, or billing systems.
