Job Overview
This position is part of Astronomer’s open-source engineering division, focusing on the development of new Airflow features and components. The selected candidate will play a vital role in advancing Apache Airflow as the industry-standard for data orchestration by designing, developing, and implementing open-source solutions enhancing the experience of data professionals using Airflow.
Working remotely in a distributed team, you will be encouraged to share knowledge openly and collaborate across teams to expand your expertise and influence. The role also provides the chance to interact with global contributors in the thriving Apache Airflow open-source community.
Primary Responsibilities
- Design and develop new functionalities and components within Airflow.
- Enhance Airflow’s performance and resilience.
- Continuously refine the developer experience of Airflow.
- Improve code quality through increased test coverage and reduced test execution time.
- Engage actively in the Airflow community via Slack, mailing lists, and GitHub.
- Collaborate closely with team members to deliver high-quality outputs.
- Support customers by diagnosing issues and providing effective solutions.
- Contribute to the growth of the Airflow Ecosystem and nurture the open-source community.
- Represent and promote new Airflow capabilities at conferences and industry events.
Candidate Profile
- At least five years of professional experience in Python development.
- Strong creative thinking skills and enthusiasm for exploring innovative ideas.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot complex technical problems.
- Solid understanding of designing scalable and distributed system architectures.
- A proactive learner who keeps up with the latest industry developments.
- Competency in writing unit tests and familiarity with various automated testing approaches.
- Team player who values collaboration, listens attentively, shares information, and gives constructive feedback.
- Effective communication skills adaptable to multiple platforms such as GitHub, Slack, Zoom, email, and pair programming sessions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience deploying Apache Airflow in live production settings.
- Background in Data Engineering disciplines.
- History of contributions to open-source software projects.
- Knowledge of Kubernetes and Docker containerization technologies.
- Experience creating and managing CI/CD pipelines.
- Familiarity with Claude Code or similar agentic tools.
