Senior Software Engineer - Application Migration

About the Role

We are seeking a seasoned Senior Engineer with solid fundamentals in computer science, expertise in systems design, and substantial experience in the Java ecosystem, streaming platforms, and data-intensive applications. This role is pivotal in shaping and enhancing the core data structures, algorithms, and database interactions powering our generative AI platform, code generation, and migration tools.

You'll develop sophisticated orchestration layers, reliable integration points, and high-performance data systems that seamlessly incorporate advanced AI functionalities for code generation and build a comprehensive data migration suite using a modern stack including Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, Debezium, and React. Working closely with AI researchers, product managers, and engineering teams, you'll design and implement innovative solutions addressing complex customer challenges. This position embraces a hybrid work mode based in Sydney.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain well-tested backend code for the data migration engine and core AI orchestration platform components.
• Collaborate with Product Management, AI researchers, ML engineers, and designers to execute the product roadmap.
• Design robust, efficient backend services orchestrating AI functions.
• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks and architectural issues within data flow and orchestration layers.
• Engage actively in code reviews to uphold coding standards and best practices.
• Troubleshoot complex technical problems in distributed systems.
• Provide and receive constructive feedback on design documents and pull requests.
• Participate in enhancing CI/CD pipelines, quality assurance, and testing processes.

Candidate Profile & Requirements

• Minimum six years’ experience working with backend, distributed, or core platform engineering.
• Strong proficiency in Java, with additional knowledge of Rust, C/C++, and/or Python beneficial; deep understanding of systems programming, memory management, and performance optimization.
• Extensive hands-on experience with streaming data platforms like Apache Kafka and Change Data Capture tools such as Debezium.
• Robust relational data modeling skills with practical experience working on SQL databases like Postgres or MySQL.
• Exposure to front-end technologies such as JavaScript and React is advantageous.
• Comprehensive knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and their complexity considerations.
• A curious mindset, positive approach, and eagerness to continually learn.
• Exceptional communication skills in both written and verbal forms.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Familiarity with cloud-native distributed systems, for example, Kubernetes.
• Experience or understanding of NoSQL databases.
• Contributions to open-source projects related to the domain.

Success Milestones

• Within 3 months: Gain familiarity with MongoDB database and aggregation language, backend stack (Java, Spring Boot, Kafka), establish development infrastructure, and start active peer collaboration including code reviews.
• Within 6 months: Understand the full application modernization tool stack, successfully deliver a significant feature across the tech stack, and participate in scoping and designing technical documents.
• Within 12 months: Become a critical backend contributor capable of handling complex features independently, assist in team recruitment and interviews, and collaborate cross-functionally across MongoDB teams.
