Role Overview

We seek a Senior Principal Software Engineer to lead our platform's technical and architectural direction. This role demands a visionary leader who sets engineering standards, makes critical technical decisions, and influences the technology landscape as we enter new regions and manage our highest profile challenges and products. This is a strategic leadership role, offering influence over technical strategy and the chance to help build and scale our engineering organization both regionally and internationally. As a trusted advisor to the CTO, you will connect architecture, engineering, product, infrastructure, security, and operations to ensure a scalable and resilient platform designed for growth. The candidate should be adept at applying AI and agentic coding techniques, blending deep technical knowledge with executive-level strategy, confidently navigating complex decisions, and challenging established norms.

Key Responsibilities

• Drive collaborative technology decisions and formulate a unified strategy across all related domains.
• Provide leadership within your domain and mentor leaders across different verticals.
• Eliminate bottlenecks by making informed technical and design trade-offs balancing opportunity and cost.
• Possess strong knowledge of modern AI/ML architectures, including LLMs, AI agents, embeddings, vector search, RAG, and model integration, and apply these to production systems.
• Identify and exploit AI-driven opportunities to enhance products, engineering productivity, automation, decision-making, and operational efficiencies.
• Lead system architecture and product design decisions to promote best practices and expedite delivery.
• Continuously audit and simplify codebases to resolve architectural issues and reduce technical debt, preventing future systemic risks.
• Establish and enforce best practices in operational excellence and risk mitigation organization-wide.
• Advise technology leaders, product teams, and stakeholders on technology decisions that enhance product growth and improvement.
• Collaborate with external commercial partners to build relationships and discover new opportunities.
• Develop deep expertise in our industry, products, feature sets, and product roadmap.
• Define the long-term architectural strategy of our event-driven platform, proactively managing complexity and mitigating risks before they impact production.
• Lead strategic initiatives spanning multiple teams, creating frameworks and patterns that become organizational standards.
• Mentor senior engineers to elevate technical skills and remove impediments.
• Manage critical trade-offs between rapid delivery and architectural integrity, providing clear guidance to product and business leaders.
• Define and maintain the "Fanatics Standard" encompassing coding standards, observability practices, incident response, and platform resilience.
• Represent Fanatics in external engagements via conferences, technical publications, and open-source contributions to foster community engagement and knowledge exchange.

Qualifications

• Over 15 years of experience designing and building highly scalable, fault-tolerant distributed systems.
• Hands-on expertise in Kotlin, Java, Kafka, Redis, Kubernetes, and AWS.
• Comprehensive knowledge of multiple architectural design methodologies, able to dissect complex architectures for distributed development.
• Skilled in breaking down ambiguous, complex systems into executable strategies for diverse teams.
• Proven track record mentoring engineers and fostering leadership.
• Excellent communicator capable of conveying complex technical concepts to diverse audiences, including non-technical stakeholders.
• Familiarity with Agile product delivery and SCRUM methodologies.
• Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Agile mindset comfortable with fast-changing priorities and rapid decision making.
• Thrives in entrepreneurial, high-growth environments with evolving priorities.
• Team-oriented with commitment to achieving goals and continuous improvement.
• Past experience in startup or scale-up environments.
• Demonstrated advanced AI capabilities and practical applications.
• Experience with international market expansions is advantageous.
