Senior Mobile Engineer – iOS / Android

About the Role

Xero is seeking a Senior Mobile Engineer to contribute to the evolution and development of the Xero Accounting App, a key mobile platform enabling small businesses globally to manage finances from anywhere. This position involves shaping our mobile architecture as we transition toward React Native, utilizing your extensive native iOS and Android development expertise.

Responsibilities

• Lead the creation and maintenance of intricate mobile features from initial concept through to deployment and ongoing support.
• Collaborate closely with Product, Design, backend, and platform teams to tackle large-scale challenges within our mobile ecosystem.
• Drive architectural decisions as Xero advances its shift from native mobile development to React Native, leveraging deep native platform knowledge to influence design patterns and best practices.
• Ensure software running in production meets high standards for availability, performance, security, and scalability, including participation in incident management processes.
• Continuously improve engineering workflow efficiency through automation, AI-assisted development, and simplification of technical systems.
• Mentor and uplift team members by providing technical guidance, conducting thorough code reviews, and fostering an environment of engineering excellence.

Candidate Profile

• Proven experience in building and shipping production-grade mobile applications using Swift for iOS and/or Kotlin for Android.
• Deep understanding of native mobile platform intricacies including performance optimization, lifecycle management, release cycles, observability, and operations in production environments.
• Eagerness and ability to quickly develop React Native skills as part of the team’s architectural evolution.
• Comfortable applying native mobile expertise to platform integration, debugging, creating native modules, and making architectural decisions amid the React Native transition.
• Experience owning complex features end-to-end, incorporating technical design, implementation, release, measurement, and ongoing operation.
• Experience interfacing with backend systems, APIs, and Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) design patterns is highly valuable.
• Track record of deploying applications to large, active user bases with an understanding of scaling impacts on architecture and technical choices.
• Ability to make pragmatic technical decisions balancing speed, customer needs, system health, and maintainability, while being open to innovation.
• Demonstrated mentoring skills and commitment to raising engineering quality through collaboration and problem-solving.
• Use of modern engineering tools, automation, and AI-assisted development for enhancing efficiency and productivity.

Work Environment

This hybrid role is based in either Melbourne or Sydney with flexibility on work arrangements. The mobile engineering team is distributed between these locations, engaging regularly in collaborative sessions and knowledge sharing activities to strengthen teamwork.
