Senior Geotechnical Engineer (Infrastructure / Soil Improvement)

About the Role

Join Parsons in Qatar as a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to lead and oversee geotechnical, earthworks, and soil enhancement tasks on a significant roads, infrastructure, and drainage initiative. This project involves roads, utility infrastructure, deep drainage systems, microtunneling, pump stations, attenuation tanks, deep structural works, and related ground improvement activities.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee and verify geotechnical construction works, including ground investigation activities like boreholes, trial pits, sampling, in-situ and laboratory testing, groundwater assessments, and geophysical surveys, acting on behalf of the Engineer.
• Analyze current and additional geotechnical data; evaluate contractor proposals ensuring ground condition verification across the project.
• Assess and provide feedback on contractor submissions involving factual and interpretative geotechnical reports, method statements, inspection and test plans, material submissions, risk evaluations, monitoring strategies, and specialized designs.
• Manage and validate ground improvement works in challenging soils such as sabkha and marine sands; ensure contractor techniques meet required bearing capacity, settlement control, and performance standards.
• Evaluate design trials and executions of ground improvement methods, including cut and replacement, rapid impact compaction, dynamic replacement, among others.
• Observe, review, and interpret pre-treatment and post-treatment testing like CPTU, plate-load, zone-load, CBR, strength/stiffness, compaction control, and settlement monitoring.
• Review geotechnical and foundation requirements for a wide range of structures including roads, embankments, microtunneling shafts, attenuation tanks, and pump stations.
• Monitor groundwater levels and assess contractor plans for groundwater monitoring and dewatering, including instrumentation and settlement cases.
• Analyze ground condition changes during works and provide prompt technical advice to the Resident Engineer and the supervision team.
• Inspect earthworks, grading, engineered fills, and compaction processes to ensure conformance with specifications, procedures, testing frequency, and acceptance criteria.
• Coordinate geotechnical considerations with multidisciplinary teams spanning roads, drainage, structural, utilities, environmental, quality, and safety.
• Collaborate with contractors, subcontractors, labs, designers, and authorities to resolve technical issues and gain necessary approvals.
• Manage site records including observations, non-conformance reports, corrective actions, and ensure proper closure of issues.
• Maintain detailed documentation and correspondence to support progress reporting, quality assurance, and project handover.
• Contribute to reviews of as-built data and handover information for completed geotechnical and ground improvement works.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, or a related field.
• At least 20 years of professional experience post-graduation, including a minimum of 10 years focused in geotechnical or soil improvement roles.
• Professional experience in the Middle East region is mandatory.
• Extensive background with engineering consultancy or Engineer’s Representative positions supervising major infrastructure, roads, and drainage construction projects.
• Proven expertise in supervising geotechnical investigations, ground improvements, earthworks, engineered fill operations, groundwater monitoring, dewatering techniques, and foundation works.
• Preferred experience with deep drainage infrastructure, microtunneling shafts, deep excavations, pump stations, attenuation tanks, or similar subterranean structures.
• Strong knowledge of geotechnical investigation methodologies and skill interpreting borehole logs, trial-pit analyses, lab test results, CPT/CPTU data, groundwater info, and geophysical surveys.
• Experienced in reviewing factual and interpretative geotechnical reports, method statements, inspection and test plans, monitoring strategies, and specialized technical designs.
• Familiarity with Qatar Construction Specifications, Qatar Highway Design Manual, and other relevant local standards.
• Understanding of ground-improvement methods applicable to sabkha, marine sand, and other soft or inconsistent ground conditions.
• Capability to manage specialized geotechnical assignments independently applying advanced principles.
• Professional registration or chartership is advantageous.
• Mandatory MME engineering certification within six months of joining for personnel deployed under contract.
• Fluent English proficiency with excellent technical writing, correspondence, and presentation talents.
• Competent with engineering software, reporting tools, document control, and project management systems.
