Role Overview

MUBI's web platform serves millions who discover, learn about, and stream films. It functions as a player, curated catalogue, and editorial publication rolled into one, requiring speed and careful design for every region we serve.

We are looking for a Senior Frontend Engineer to join our team. You will be deeply involved in architecting and building MUBI's website, catering to cinema lovers worldwide. This senior, hands-on individual contributor role reports to the Head of Frontend.

Collaborating closely with product managers, UX/UI designers, video CDN engineers, and backend developers, you will develop smooth and high-performing digital experiences — covering discovery channels, streaming capabilities, and editorial content.

Our hybrid-remote policy asks for three office days if you are near an office location, typically Tuesday to Thursday, with optional office use on other days.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop comprehensive web features spanning film discovery, catalogues, media player integration, and editorial pages using React, TypeScript, and Next.js.
• Take full ownership of features, including technical planning, coding, automated testing (unit, integration, end-to-end), deployment, and monitoring.
• Ensure effortless media playback by working directly on player integrations, adaptive streaming, dynamic video previews, and advanced media components.
• Optimize performance continuously by analyzing client-side bundles, Core Web Vitals, server-side rendering, and caching strategies.
• Drive up code quality standards through stringent testing, thorough code reviews, and mentoring team members.
• Leverage AI tools pragmatically by experimenting with coding assistants, sharing effective prompts, and prioritizing measurable improvements over novelty.

Required Qualifications

• Over eight years of experience developing complex, large-scale consumer-facing web applications primarily using React, Next.js with server-side rendering, and TypeScript.
• Deep expertise with DOM, browser rendering optimization, web performance profiling, state management, and HTTP/media protocols.
• Strong understanding of modern web media delivery and playback, including technologies like HLS, DASH, Widevine, FairPlay, and CORS.
• Active advocacy for AI adoption in engineering workflows with a focus on productivity gains.
• Commitment to maintainable code, test-driven development using tools like Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress, or Playwright, and continuous integration/deployment.
• Effective communication skills in agile cross-functional environments using tools such as Slack and Linear.
• A proactive and independent mindset with curiosity about product usage and an ability to self-generate improvement questions.

Preferred Attributes

• Experience working in fast-paced startup or scale-up environments.
• Participation or leadership in cross-team projects involving Product, Marketing, Finance, or Engineering.
• Experience collaborating closely with design teams and working on design systems.
