Role Overview

The Senior Estimator is pivotal in producing precise project cost estimates that reflect actual construction practices and conditions. Ideal candidates come from a background of extensive onsite experience, such as former Project Managers, and possess over a decade in construction. This role demands strong technical knowledge, commercial insight, and a comprehensive understanding of civil engineering processes to ensure competitive and compliant tender submissions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Guide and mentor junior Estimators and Assistants, including formulating and monitoring personal development plans.
  • Maintain meticulous records of all tender documents, including addendums and client communications, ensuring prompt dissemination.
  • Develop and manage subcontractor enquiry schedules and issue clear, detailed subcontract and material enquiries aligned with procurement strategies.
  • Review and verify Bills of Quantities for accuracy.
  • Monitor tender returns, raise queries, and sustain live enquiry tracking.
  • Evaluate design details in Design & Build tenders to discover opportunities for value engineering.
  • Document clarifications, estimator notes, and maintain audit-ready records.
  • Integrate late amendments into costings and submissions effectively.
  • Contribute actively to tender risk assessments and shepherd risk and value engineering schedules.
  • Maintain and regularly update risk registers for bids and lead tender review meetings, implementing corrective measures as necessary.
  • Analyze subcontractor tenders and prepare comprehensive comparative analyses for adjudication.
  • Assess fixed price and contingency allocations for packages.
  • Prepare tender settlement documentation detailing net costs, risks, and opportunities.
  • Develop thorough tender sum analyses including cash flow forecasts and attend adjudication sessions to implement required adjustments.
  • Produce client pricing documentation, including Forms of Tender and preliminary cost breakdowns.
  • Create cash flow models to assist bid budget management within agreed limits.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years experience within the construction industry, including at least 5 years in an estimating position.
  • Strong practical knowledge of onsite operations, sequencing, required resources, and the challenges of project delivery, ideally with prior Project Management experience.
  • Expertise in civil engineering construction projects, with direct site exposure considered a plus.
  • Proven experience in preparing and leading tender submissions and participating in estimate adjudications.
  • Familiarity with standard contracts such as Public Works Contract, FIDIC, and NEC.
  • Experience in Design & Build projects is an advantage.
  • Understanding of the Irish civil engineering and construction supply chain is beneficial.
  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or equivalent relevant qualification.
  • Valid CSCS card.
  • Membership or working towards membership of a recognized professional body is preferred.
  • Continuous professional development in estimating, pre-construction, or commercial management is advantageous.

Benefits

  • Competitive remuneration package.
  • 26 days of annual leave.
  • Participation in pension scheme.
  • Comprehensive wellness, health, and lifestyle support programs.
  • Opportunities for career advancement.
  • Access to extensive Total Rewards program.
