Job description

About Sener

Sener is a global engineering and technology group with seven decades of experience, providing innovative and sustainable solutions across various sectors including infrastructure, transport, energy, aerospace, and marine. Operating in over 20 countries, the company blends technical excellence with forward-thinking approaches to tackle complex and transformative projects.

Role Overview

The Senior Electrical Engineer will focus on creating and reviewing detailed electrical designs specific to major infrastructure initiatives, particularly station electrical systems, while ensuring coordinated multidisciplinary project delivery. The role demands strong technical judgement, management of assigned design packages, and the promotion of design assurance, constructability, and Safety in Design throughout the project's lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce comprehensive electrical designs, calculations, reports, and specifications for large infrastructure projects.
  • Lead designated electrical design packages and provide expert technical guidance during all design phases.
  • Analyze project scope, client needs, and relevant standards to develop compliant practical electrical solutions.
  • Design and review outputs related to low voltage distribution, UPS systems, critical power, lighting, cable containment, earthing and bonding, metering, and other associated station systems.
  • Compose procurement and installation specifications for major components and provide control system interface data.
  • Collaborate with architectural, structural, civil, and building services teams to ensure integrated design outcomes.
  • Conduct design reviews and supervise work performed by engineers and designers.
  • Mentor junior staff, encouraging technical growth, knowledge sharing, and design consistency.
  • Engage in peer and multi-disciplinary design reviews and contribute to design assurance processes.
  • Participate in Safety in Design workshops, ensuring integration of agreed solutions into design outputs.
  • Manage assigned design activities, milestones, and deadlines aligned with project schedules.
  • Ensure adherence to project scope, technical specifications, Australian Standards, and internal quality systems.
  • Develop procurement documents, evaluate supplier proposals, and support technical assessments.
  • Engage with suppliers to incorporate specific product data into detailed design submissions.
  • Incorporate considerations related to constructability, operability, and maintainability into designs in collaboration with relevant team members.
  • Contribute to standard procedures, technical improvements, and the adoption of digital engineering methods.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
  • Registration as a Registered Professional Engineer of Victoria (RPEV), Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng), or progression towards such credentials is highly valued.
  • At least 8 years of experience in electrical system design for large infrastructure, rail, transport, building, or industrial projects.
  • Proven capability in independently delivering electrical design packages on complex projects.
  • Experience reviewing design deliverables created by other engineers and designers.
  • In-depth technical knowledge of electrical engineering principles including high voltage distribution, low voltage network configurations, protection systems, earthing, discrimination, demand management, fault analysis, voltage drop calculations, cable sizing, lighting design, motors and drives, emergency and exit lighting, redundancy, and reliability.
  • Competence in preparing detailed technical design documents, calculations, reports, specifications, and consolidated design documentation.
  • Proficiency with electrical engineering design and calculation software such as PowerCAD, AGi32, or equivalents.
  • Familiarity with applicable Australian Standards.
  • Experience participating as part of multidisciplinary teams delivering mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, fire, and life safety systems.
  • Commitment to Safety in Design principles.
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and collaborate effectively within a team.
  • Support experience in design reviews, technical coordination, and quality assurance.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills capable of conveying technical information clearly.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Previous involvement in rail, station design, or major Australian infrastructure projects.
  • CPEng or equivalent professional engineer certification, or willingness to pursue it.
  • Current or past roles in the RIW System involving designer, checker, or approver responsibilities.
  • Experience with HV electrical systems, building services, heavy industrial, or process plant projects.
  • Use of BIM and digital engineering tools.
  • Understanding of how constructability considerations influence design outcomes.
  • Control system design experience.
  • Experience designing electrical fire systems.
