The eBay Cloud team supports foundational infrastructure for thousands of eBay applications, managing hundreds of Kubernetes clusters and millions of global compute instances. The Traffic Engineering unit ensures the robustness, scalability, security, and performance of this vast cloud platform, owning global traffic management, load balancing, point of presence architecture, service mesh, API gateways, advanced network policies, and edge-to-cluster connectivity.

Our traffic platforms handle billions of daily requests with secure, low-latency global communication. They feature resilient routing and observability systems enhanced by AI to enable intelligent traffic flow, reliability prediction, automated recovery, and streamlined developer tools.

Responsibilities

• Lead a committed team fostering ownership, innovation, operational excellence, and ongoing improvement.
• Mentor engineers, supporting career growth and technical skill enhancement.
• Drive strategic hiring, succession planning, and talent development initiatives.
• Collaborate with senior leadership on engineering strategy and prioritization.
• Oversee the design, deployment, and operation of scalable, secure traffic management platforms powering eBay’s private cloud.
• Promote cloud-native architectures, platform standardization, and AI-driven operations to enhance scalability, reliability, and developer productivity.
• Leverage AI and machine learning for anomaly detection, capacity forecasting, intelligent routing, incident mitigation, root cause analysis, and self-healing capabilities.
• Ensure comprehensive engineering expertise from architecture to deployment and operational readiness.
• Implement AI-assisted workflows to improve infrastructure efficiency and accelerate incident response.
• Build intelligent self-service tools to simplify traffic management for application teams.
• Partner with SRE and platform engineering to apply automation-first frameworks enhancing system resilience and scalability.
• Elevate developer experience by standardizing tools, observability, policy automation, and platform integration.
• Engage cross-functionally with Cloud Engineering, SRE, Product Management, Fleet Management, and Security to align investments with business goals.
• Collaborate with security teams to implement robust controls, compliance, zero-trust networking, and threat protection.
• Coordinate strategic planning and resource optimization with infrastructure and fleet teams to advance cloud cost-efficiency.
• Influence architectural and operational standards across multiple engineering departments globally.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
• Over 10 years of software engineering experience, including at least 5 years in leadership roles within large-scale infrastructure teams.
• Proven success leading high-performing teams focused on cloud infrastructure, networking, platform engineering, or distributed systems.
• Extensive technical expertise in cloud-native technologies such as Kubernetes, containerization, service mesh, and microservices architectures.
• In-depth knowledge of large-scale traffic management, networking, reliability engineering, and cloud security concepts.
• Experience implementing operational excellence via automation, observability, SRE practices, and AI-driven workflows.
• Strong communication and collaborative leadership skills with influence across technical and organizational boundaries.
• Familiarity with operating within large, distributed engineering organizations involving multiple partners.

Preferred Skills

• Hands-on experience with custom Linux kernel development for high-performance or large-scale systems.
• Expertise in planning, prioritization, and cost optimization of expansive cloud environments.
• Comprehensive understanding of networking, security, storage, distributed systems, DevOps, and SRE best practices.
• Practical knowledge of AI and ML-based operational tools, observability platforms, or autonomous infrastructure systems.
• Relevant Kubernetes or cloud infrastructure certifications (e.g., CKA, CKS).
• Experience collaborating with Information Security teams on compliance, governance, and monitoring.
• Insight into developer experience principles and creating user-friendly platforms for engineering teams.
• Product-centric mindset balancing scalability, security, operational cadence, and user empathy.
