As part of DoorDash, Wolt builds recommendation systems to help customers find the most suitable restaurants, dishes, and items throughout their user experience.

Role Overview

The Applied Scientist will enhance machine learning models underpinning these recommendations. This role involves tackling sophisticated ML challenges connecting model efficacy, product choices, and user experience, taking initiatives from conception through production with measurable user impact.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and optimize models for recommendations, ranking, and retrieval to present the most relevant restaurants, dishes, items, and content.
• Manage applied ML initiatives comprehensively: from problem definition, data analysis, modeling, and offline validation to experimental runs and production monitoring.
• Create methods that harmonize relevance with product goals and user needs such as diversity, availability, business rules, and evolving user intent.
• Collaborate effectively with software and ML engineers, product managers, and analysts to translate scientific findings into dependable customer solutions.
• Assess and apply cutting-edge ML techniques when they provide meaningful improvements in recommendation quality, robustness, or efficiency.
• Promote high standards in applied science through technical reviews, knowledge exchange, and thoughtful experimentation.

Expectations

• Proven practical experience in applying machine learning to real-world problems with successful deployment of models; PhD candidates with relevant applied research are welcomed.
• Familiarity with recommendation systems, ranking, retrieval, personalization, or related ML fields.
• Ability to independently conceptualize ML solutions for ambiguous customer or product challenges, balancing trade-offs to achieve measurable results.
• Proficiency in Python programming and experience with contemporary ML frameworks and large-scale data handling.
• Understanding of robust ML evaluation techniques including offline metrics, experimental design, and online analysis.
• Effective communication of complex technical concepts and strong interdisciplinary collaboration capabilities.
