Role Overview
We seek an experienced Senior Android Video Player Engineer to lead efforts in designing, building, and enhancing video playback frameworks and SDKs for live streaming on Android and Android TV platforms. Ideal candidates have extensive production experience managing playback quality and reliability in high-demand streaming contexts, owning the end-to-end experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect, implement, and fine-tune Android video player systems specialized in live streaming delivery.
- Customize and extend ExoPlayer features, including adapting ABR (adaptive bitrate) logic and player construction for optimized playback.
- Diagnose and resolve advanced live streaming playback challenges such as buffering delays, latency, and rebuffering incidents.
- Handle dynamic media manifests (MPD/M3U8) and maintain smooth playback across varying network conditions.
- Integrate advertising solutions like IMA, DAI, and SSAI within the player infrastructure.
- Leverage quality of experience (QoE) analytics platforms to identify playback issues and drive performance improvements.
- Collaborate effectively with cross-disciplinary teams to uphold consistent playback standards across device ecosystems.
- Promote best practices and contribute to ongoing enhancements for streaming technology projects.
Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum seven years of professional Android development expertise utilizing Kotlin and Java.
- Documented experience developing and sustaining video player applications and live playback features on Android and Android TV.
- Advanced, hands-on knowledge of ExoPlayer customization and tuning for live stream performance.
- Strong capability to troubleshoot playback irregularities, focusing on minimizing rebuffering, latency, and stabilizing streams.
- Familiar with streaming protocols DASH and HLS, as well as adaptive bitrate streaming methodologies and ad insertion technologies (IMA, SSAI, DAI).
- Experience using video analytics tools (such as Conviva, Mux, Hydrolix) to monitor and enhance player QoE.
- Proficient with modern Android UI frameworks and asynchronous programming using Jetpack Compose, Kotlin Coroutines, and Flows.
- Excellent communication skills in English, capable of clear written and verbal exchange.
- Self-driven, able to excel in remote, dynamic team environments.
