Job description
About Our Team
The Seagate Design Engineering group encompasses multiple specialized units including Advanced Recording Subsystem (ARS), Electrical Integration, Servo, Mechanical, Test Process, and Firmware. ARS specifically focuses on tightly integrated areas such as Head Disk Electrical (HDE), Head Disk Mechanical (HDM), and Channel preamplifiers.
The ARS-HDE group combines diverse experts operating from three key design centers globally, collaborating with engineering teams, partners, and manufacturing to pioneer recording technologies. The team’s scope spans from immediate product development and launch to conceptual designs 3-4 years ahead, emphasizing robust component integration, head-media matching optimization, and evolving architectures to enhance aerial density and reliability.
Role Overview
As a Senior Engineer in ARS-HDE, you will drive cutting-edge recording technology development supporting future hard disk drives, enhancing storage capacity and performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Work on innovative recording approaches such as Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording for Nearline storage.
- Build technical mastery in recording methods including Adjacent Track Interference mitigation, advanced laser control, Variable Bit Aspect Ratio techniques, and electrical characterization of head-media subsystems.
- Engage in R&D for next-generation magnetic recording technologies.
- Create proof-of-concept tests to validate new recording principles and system solutions.
- Lead design, integration, testing, and fine-tuning of recording subsystems.
- Contribute to advanced technology explorations targeting storage beyond current generation products.
- Design experiments investigating complex interactions among components and subsystems.
- Develop automated tools and software scripts to streamline data processing and accelerate experiments.
- Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to address challenging technical problems.
- Assume increasing responsibility driving research projects with technical independence.
Candidate Profile
- Enthusiastic about innovation, research, and emerging technologies.
- Inquisitive and motivated to tackle complex engineering challenges.
- Self-directed with ability to independently manage technical initiatives and projects.
- Hands-on experience working with lab equipment, conducting experiments, and performing technical investigations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective team player with experience collaborating in multidisciplinary environments.
- Adaptable and keen to acquire new technical skills and knowledge.
- Committed to ongoing learning and technical excellence.
Required Experience and Qualifications
- Master's or Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Physics, Photonics, or related fields.
- Solid grounding in electromagnetics, applied physics, signal processing or equivalent engineering fundamentals.
- Beneficial knowledge areas include magnetic recording, data storage systems, spintronics, photonics, optics, and semiconductor technology.
- Programming proficiency in Python, C/C++, and Procomm Plus.
- Experience with experimental research, laboratory measurements, data analysis, modeling, and technical investigations.
- Familiarity with scientific methods, hypothesis-driven experimentation, and prototyping proof-of-concept solutions.
Location and Facilities
The role is based at the Shugart site in Singapore, a dedicated research and design center easily accessible via the One-North MRT Station. The site offers excellent recreational amenities including badminton courts, table tennis, a gym, and various community activities such as photography, gardening, and language classes. Participation in onsite events and volunteering opportunities is encouraged.
