Job description

About Smart Working

Smart Working is committed to offering not just a job that looks good on paper but one that feels fulfilling daily. Our platform breaks down geographical barriers, connecting talented individuals with exceptional international teams for full-time, long-term roles. From your first day, you will join a supportive, growth-oriented community in a fully remote-first environment, continuously highlighted as one of the highest-rated workplaces on Glassdoor.

Role Overview

The Senior AdTech Engineer will play a pivotal role leading the advancement of our proprietary programmatic advertising platform, currently in its third version and actively used in production. The role is predominantly backend-focused (approximately 80%) while also involving some frontend responsibilities (about 20%). You will independently manage a vital section of the platform, collaborating closely with a data scientist and guiding the engineering team alongside the CTO. Your responsibilities will include hands-on coding, architectural decision-making, and providing technical leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and enhance backend systems and infrastructure supporting a programmatic ad platform, ensuring low-latency and high-throughput to handle ad requests processing within milliseconds.
  • Create proprietary AI agents for media purchasing and distribution, working closely with data scientists to enrich ad request content and tagging.
  • Integrate with external AdTech platforms and APIs such as OpenRTB, Demand-Side Platforms (DSPs), and Supply-Side Platforms (SSPs).
  • Serve as a senior engineer guiding the team through code reviews, mentoring, and setting technical standards without direct line management responsibilities.
  • Take full ownership of critical platform areas, collaborating tightly with the data science team and broader engineering staff.
  • Employ architectural expertise and detailed attention to maintain platform reliability in a real-time bidding environment sensitive to latency and correctness.
  • Shape integration of agentic AI processes within the platform.
  • Adopt sound engineering practices including GitOps deployment workflows and a robust code review culture.
  • Lead problem-solving efforts for proprietary tech development beyond mere specification adherence.
  • Carefully refine and improve a live, performance-critical system to prevent disruptions.
  • Oversee end-to-end design and implementation of services or components.
  • Mentor engineers via code reviews and guidance to maintain high technical quality.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of advanced backend development using Node.js.
  • At least 3 years developing low-latency, high-throughput systems with millisecond response capabilities, applicable experience includes fintech, trading, banking, real-time gaming or betting backends.
  • Over 1 year of hands-on experience creating agentic AI solutions for production, particularly LLM agents, working in concert with data scientists on machine learning models.
  • 5+ years building APIs and integrating third-party services.
  • At least 2 years conducting code and peer reviews, mentoring engineers, or serving as a senior individual contributor responsible for review standards.
  • Minimum 3 years proficient in TypeScript or strong experience in modern JavaScript.
  • At least 2 years working with React.
  • Minimum 2 years experience on Google Cloud Platform or comparable cloud services like AWS or Azure.
  • At least 2 years working with Kubernetes and Argo CD for GitOps deployments or alternatives such as Flux or Helm.
  • Senior-level engineering or architectural capabilities including technical leadership and close collaboration with executive leadership (e.g., CTO).

Preferred Skills

  • 2+ years experience in programmatic advertising involving OpenRTB, real-time bidding, DSPs, or SSPs; however, strong background in low-latency systems can substitute while domain terminology is acquired.
  • Experience leading initiatives and handling full lifecycle service/component delivery.
  • Basic knowledge of Golang or alternative high-performance programming languages such as Rust, Java, or C++.
  • 1+ year working with Jenkins or equivalent CI/CD systems like GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or CircleCI.
  • 1+ year of experience with Grafana or monitoring systems such as Prometheus, Datadog, or New Relic.
