Overview
This position is situated within a school-based environment, classified as non-contract and non-exempt. The custodian reports directly to the school principal and works either 200 days annually over 10 months or 235 days over 12 months. The role focuses on manual housekeeping duties, sanitation, and enhancing the school's appearance while maintaining safety and security.
Qualifications
Applicants should have at least an eighth-grade education, with a high school diploma or GED preferred. No certification or licensure is required. Knowledge is essential regarding building and grounds maintenance methods, materials, and equipment usage, including custodial tools like auto scrubbers and burnish machines, as well as compliance with occupational safety and health regulations. A foundational understanding of emergency response procedures is also necessary. Candidates must demonstrate professionalism, ethical behavior, confidentiality, and the ability to follow directions effectively.
Primary Responsibilities
- Maintain cleanliness by dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, scrubbing, and buffing floors in classrooms, hallways, locker rooms, gymnasiums, cafeterias, and offices.
- Clean and maintain surfaces such as ceilings, chalkboards, counters, tables, lockers, walls, light fixtures, blinds, windows, restrooms, clinics, and water fountains.
- Operate cleaning and grounds equipment safely, including power mowers, ladders, tools, and custodial devices.
- Order and manage building supplies while adhering to the supply budget.
- Assist staff by delivering items to classrooms, moving furniture, and handling other strenuous, manual tasks.
- Ensure the safety and overall condition of the building and grounds, including opening and closing buildings per district protocols.
- Use personal protective equipment and comply with regulatory mandates related to handling cleaning chemicals and refuse.
- Replace light bulbs and maintain basic maintenance duties as assigned, including potentially operating HVAC equipment if certified.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors or in accordance with school policies and regulations.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
The work environment is typically moderate in noise. The custodian will frequently walk, stand, and sit, regularly communicate, and occasionally lift or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Responsibilities may include lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds and performing physically demanding repetitive tasks involving manual labor. Overtime or night work may be required on occasion. Reasonable accommodations will be provided for individuals with disabilities.
