Job Overview
The Safety Officer is responsible for managing and evaluating the safety performance at First Quantum Minerals’ Trident site, identifying unsafe conditions, and implementing strategies to mitigate risks effectively.
Key Responsibilities
- Advocate and implement occupational health and safety measures throughout the organization to foster safer working environments.
- Conduct thorough inspections of workplaces and equipment to ensure compliance with safety standards and detect any hazards.
- Collaborate with engineering, supervisory, and coordination teams to maintain secure work practices and environments.
- Verify correct use of personal protective equipment such as hearing protection, dust masks, safety glasses, footwear, and helmets.
- Ensure proper storage and handling of hazardous materials within the facility.
- Identify areas susceptible to accidents or health risks, including toxic fumes or explosive gases, and enforce suitable control measures.
- Promote awareness and adherence to relevant legislation regarding workplace duties, equipment, and substance use.
- Document and report any workplace hazards, accidents, injuries, and health concerns.
- Support investigations into accidents and unsafe conditions, analyze root causes, and propose corrective actions.
- Deliver training programs on health and safety legislation and best practices to various levels of staff.
- Assist with emergency protocols including mine rescue, firefighting, and first aid teams as needed.
- Maintain regular communication with management regarding the progress and status of safety initiatives.
- Develop and update occupational health and safety systems encompassing policies, procedures, and manuals.
- Review implementation of action plans and oversee closure of safety events on the INX InControl system.
- Conduct scheduled inspections and audits following key performance metrics.
- Promote visual felt leadership (VFL) within assigned departments.
- Perform additional duties assigned by the Superintendent.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related mining-focused qualification from a university.
- Minimum of two years’ experience in a similar safety role, ideally within the mining industry.
- Valid driver’s license with at least two years’ driving experience.
- Certification and practical experience in First Aid.
