Position Overview

We are seeking Route Setters responsible for designing engaging and approachable boulder problems suitable for climbers across a broad range of ages and skill levels. Working closely with the Head Routesetter and in small collaborative teams, Route Setters ensure climbs are consistent with VITAL's grading system through forerunning initiatives. Additionally, they play an active role mentoring apprentices as part of the VITAL Apprenticeship program.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and set diverse and enjoyable commercial boulder routes tailored to various experience levels.
• Lead group-based forerunning and modifications of boulder resets to maintain quality and grade consistency.
• Exchange constructive feedback on routes and contribute to continuous improvement.
• Mentor aspiring setters within the apprenticeship program to develop future talent.
• Support the Setter Support Crew with activities such as wall stripping, cleaning, and hold organization when needed.
• Maintain a tidy and organized workplace environment.
• Manage daily risk assessments within the climbing zones of the facility.
• Perform maintenance on climbing infrastructure including t-nut replacements, repainting, and repairs.
• Engage in and support competitions, events, and climbing workshops.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 to 3 years’ experience in commercial routesetting.
• At least 3 years climbing background, with both indoor and outdoor climbing preferred.
• Strong understanding of climbing techniques and movement mechanics.
• Inventive problem-solving skills and creative thinking abilities.
• Active participation in the climbing community.
• Ability to collaborate effectively through giving and receiving constructive feedback.
• Capacity to work independently and take ownership of responsibilities.
• Comfort working at heights with tools and ladders.
• Physical capability to lift up to 50 pounds and endure standing or walking for extended periods.
• Familiarity with hand-held power tools such as impact drivers and angle grinders.
• Climbing proficiency up to V8 level and capacity to set and forerun boulders beyond on-sight limits.
