Regional Clinical Lead

Overview

The University of Waikato is establishing the New Zealand Graduate School of Medicine (NZGSM), aimed at enhancing New Zealand's health workforce and training future doctors to serve communities nationwide. This initiative features a distributed medical education model that links students with hospitals, primary care providers, and local communities across multiple regions.

Role Summary

We are appointing ten Regional Clinical Leads across Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki/Whanganui, and Nelson Marlborough. Each region will have one Primary Care Lead and one Hospital Lead. These part-time roles (0.2 FTE, approximately 7.5 hours per week) are three-year appointments focused on providing clinical leadership and academic representation for the University in their area.

The Primary Care Lead concentrates on clinical learning experiences in community and primary care settings, while the Hospital Lead focuses on hospital and acute care environments. Together, they work to integrate high-quality clinical education for medical students in years 2 through 4.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with healthcare providers, iwi, community groups, clinical educators, and partners to deliver outstanding clinical learning opportunities.
• Support and influence the development of medical education tailored to regional health needs.
• Maintain active clinical practice while providing leadership to shape the new medical school.

Candidate Profile

• Medical degree and current Annual Practising Certificate in good standing with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
• Extensive ongoing clinical experience and proven involvement in clinical teaching, supervision, or medical education.
• Exceptional communication, facilitation, relationship management, and collaboration skills.
• A strong understanding of health equity, cultural safety, and the health priorities of Māori, Pacific peoples, rural, and regional communities.
• For Primary Care Leads: vocational registration as a General Practitioner in New Zealand and active primary care practice of at least 0.2 FTE.
• For Hospital Leads: vocational registration in a relevant medical specialty with continued active hospital-based clinical practice.
