Rail Design Director - Architecture

About the Role

Jacobs is seeking a seasoned Rail Design Director specialized in Architecture to join our Buildings & Logistics team located in Abu Dhabi. This leadership position entails steering the architectural vision, technical execution, and strategic planning of large-scale rail and transit infrastructure projects such as high-speed rail, metro, light rail, commuter rail, and transit-oriented developments.

Responsibilities

• Guide the architectural vision and design approach for significant rail and transit infrastructure initiatives.
• Lead diverse design teams through all project phases including concept, schematic, detailed design, procurement, and construction support.
• Maintain high design standards and implement governance processes ensuring technical excellence.
• Provide strategic oversight and mentorship to architects, urban designers, technical experts, and project personnel.
• Oversee the development and delivery of facilities including rail stations, interchanges, depots, and maintenance centers.
• Apply technical expertise across rail types such as high-speed, metro, light rail, and integrated transportation solutions.
• Ensure designs prioritize passenger experience, functionality, accessibility, safety, and sustainable outcomes.
• Facilitate integration of rail infrastructure with urban environments, multimodal hubs, and transit-oriented developments.
• Engage with clients and participate in strategic planning for expansive rail programs.
• Build and maintain relationships with clients, governmental bodies, transport operators, contractors, and stakeholders.
• Support business development efforts and identify opportunities within the transportation sector.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Architecture; Master’s degree is advantageous.
• Professional accreditation or chartership with a recognized architectural body is highly preferred.
• A minimum of 15 years’ experience in architecture related to transportation infrastructure, including senior leadership roles.
• Proven success leading extensive rail and transit infrastructure projects.
• Expertise designing rail stations, transit hubs, and passenger-focused infrastructure.
• Familiarity with diverse rail systems like high-speed rail, metro, commuter rail, and integrated transport projects.
• Demonstrated capability managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders and technical challenges.
• Experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams across various project sites.
• Preferably experience with projects in the GCC or Middle East regions.
• Comprehensive understanding of international rail and infrastructure design standards.
• Excellent leadership, communication, client relations, and stakeholder collaboration skills.
