Job description
About the Role
Metric is collaborating with a rapidly growing quantum computing company that has operational hardware deployed with enterprise clients. As the company advances towards commercialization and broader scale, a pivotal role is available for a theory-focused scientist to steer hardware development strategy.
Based in London, this position involves scrutinizing and stress-testing photonic system designs and light-matter interaction frameworks, anticipating performance limits before physical experimentation or financial investment. The role also requires close engagement with experimental teams to update and hone models accordingly.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess various quantum computing architectures and interaction approaches, carefully balancing factors such as error rates, system complexity, and scalability implications.
- Ensure accuracy of simulation models by benchmarking them against experimental results and iteratively refining component designs.
- Develop models for both current and next-generation quantum hardware; collaborate with applications experts to link hardware component behavior to computational capabilities.
- Contribute to the broader research agenda through scholarly publications, patent contributions, and internal technical assessments.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Strong expertise in quantum optics and architectures for quantum computing.
- Proficient in independently creating and sustaining simulation software.
- Capable of independently approaching complex problems from their foundational principles to practical solutions while effectively collaborating within a team environment.
- Possess a PhD in physics or equivalent substantial research experience.
Preferred Attributes
- Knowledge of atomic physics, light-matter interaction specifics, or real-world constraints typical of optical hardware systems.
- Experience in modeling phenomena such as cavity quantum electrodynamics or atom-ensemble light interactions.
- Evidence of research dissemination including publications, preprints, or patents in quantum technologies.
- Genuine enthusiasm for bridging theoretical frameworks with experimental verification.
- Familiarity with leveraging artificial intelligence tools to accelerate research productivity.
Additional Information
- Based in London with sponsorship available for the right candidate.
