Role Overview

As the Product Owner for the AI Email App, you will operate at the crossroads of user requirements, AI model capabilities, and engineering limitations. Collaborating closely with machine learning and engineering teams, you will define system behaviors, evaluation methods, and iterative improvements. This role is highly technical and hands-on, requiring a thorough understanding of the system and the courage to challenge technical decisions.

Key Responsibilities

• Establish comprehensive requirements for AI features including model behavior, system operations, and user experience.
• Interpret model capabilities, evaluation data, and technical constraints to guide product and system decisions.
• Balance trade-offs across quality, speed, cost, reliability, safety, and user interface considerations.
• Partner with machine learning experts, backend developers, and front-end engineers on designing, evaluating, and refining systems.
• Create and enhance evaluation frameworks incorporating offline metrics, live testing, and user feedback.
• Set clear quality standards and establish feedback mechanisms for AI-driven functionalities.
• Drive product development through clear requirement specifications, prioritization, and sound technical judgment.
• Identify system failure scenarios ensuring AI behaves predictably and recovers smoothly.
• Take full ownership of product excellence, including accuracy, reliability, utility, and earning user trust.

Required Skills and Experience

• Solid foundation in computer science and effective system design abilities.
• Good understanding of contemporary machine learning and real-world AI system behavior.
• Ability to analyze technical system designs and collaborate closely with engineering teams.
• Insightful intuition about model constraints, hallucinations, evaluation methods, and known failure patterns.
• Extensive experience managing complex technical products from start to finish.
• Proven background developing AI-enriched products, especially those based on large language models.
• Expertise in model evaluation, experimentation, prompting techniques, or iterative AI system improvement.
• Capability to convert vague challenges into defined requirements, quantifiable goals, and actionable plans.
• Sound decision-making skills when faced with ambiguous issues.
• Highly technical, inquisitive mindset with comfort in diving deep into problems.
• Strong preference for shipping products quickly, experimenting, and learning from actual user data.
• Constructive approach to questioning engineers and researchers while maintaining collaboration.
• Comfortable owning significant responsibilities in a fast-paced startup or zero-to-one environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience shipping AI-centric consumer software.
• Previous role as an engineer or technically adept product manager.
• Background in defining machine learning evaluation metrics.
• Clear understanding of AI user experience patterns and managing failures gracefully.
• Experience working in early-stage, zero-to-one product development environments.
