Produce Clerk - Full Time

About the Role

Food Basics is seeking a dedicated Produce Clerk to join our team on a full-time, permanent basis. As a key member of our produce department, you will be responsible for maintaining the freshness, quality, and appealing display of fruits and vegetables. This position is unionized with hourly wages ranging from $18.00 to $21.35, with potential for higher pay based on your experience, skills, and education within the collective agreement structure.

Key Responsibilities

• Receive and sort incoming produce shipments in the storage areas and coolers.
• Stock produce shelves and displays following first-in, first-out guidelines to ensure freshness.
• Design and maintain visually attractive produce displays.
• Inspect all produce for quality and remove any spoiled or damaged items.
• Maintain proper temperature and humidity controls in the produce section.
• Assist customers in locating products and provide guidance on selection and storage of produce items.
• Handle customer questions and resolve related issues.
• Perform regular cleaning tasks, including sweeping, mopping, sanitizing equipment and workspaces, and proper disposal of waste and compostables.
• Monitor stock inventory continuously and conduct periodic counts, reporting discrepancies and low stock to management.
• Label all produce accurately with prices and product details.
• Manage promotional signage and ensure pricing accuracy both in system and on displays.
• Reduce prices on items as required and adhere strictly to food safety and sanitation standards.
• Operate equipment safely and report any safety hazards to management immediately.
• Provide assistance with shopping cart maintenance and support other departments and special events as needed.
• Perform additional tasks assigned by management to support store operations.

Candidate Qualifications

• Strong customer service focus with the ability to interact positively with shoppers.
• Proficient at stocking merchandise and creating attractive displays.
• Detail-oriented with sound product knowledge.
• Capable of lifting weights ranging from 30 to 50 pounds.
• Previous retail experience is advantageous but not mandatory.
• Ability to stand for prolonged periods during shifts.
• Flexible availability including nights, weekends, and holidays is required.
