Role Overview
As the Privacy Engineering Director on the Privacy Functional Team, you will lead the resolution of complex and high-impact privacy challenges across DuckDuckGo's products. This role demands deep expertise in privacy engineering, audit frameworks, and cross-team collaboration to drive crucial initiatives shaping the future of private browsing, search, and agentic computing.
Responsibilities
- Lead high-complexity privacy projects from conception through delivery.
- Develop and refine privacy audit and triage processes.
- Build automation tools to reduce engineering workload.
- Mentor and grow privacy engineering talent.
- Contribute significantly to the company's overall privacy strategy.
- Drive technical solutions addressing user data privacy in AI-assisted workflows and private search indexing.
Candidate Profile
- Over 10 years of experience managing privacy reviews, audits, or privacy programs in consumer-facing companies with large user bases (1 million+ users).
- Minimum of 4 years in privacy engineering leadership, developing infrastructure, data minimization, or related privacy-preserving technologies.
- Demonstrated leadership experience at director-level or above, with direct responsibility for hiring and managing teams as well as technical oversight.
- Proven ability to independently drive cross-functional, complex projects.
- Exceptional communication skills for translating privacy principles into actionable engineering decisions amidst varying stakeholder priorities.
- Experience optimizing organizational processes by identifying bottlenecks, implementing automation, and building scalable review systems.
- A genuine passion for privacy and improving online trust standards.
Compensation and Benefits
The annual salary for this position is $243,800 USD plus stock options. Compensation is transparent and standardized by professional level and region. U.S.-based employees are eligible for company-sponsored health benefits, which are not extended to other international employees.
Additional Information
- Team member support includes paid parental leave, ergonomic office setups, and co-working allowances.
- Work is fully remote with no core hours but generally requires a 40-hour weekly commitment.
- Candidates must pass a background check prior to employment.
- Meetings require active video participation.
- Travel approximately twice annually for company all-hands and team retreats, each lasting about 4–5 days, with strong encouragement to attend.
