About the Role

Join our team as a Prisoner Custody Officer (PCO) at Southampton Crown and Magistrates Court (SO15 2XQ), where you'll play a crucial role in maintaining the safety and security within the justice system. This position offers a stable career path with clear salary progression starting at £25,555 for a 35-hour work week, increasing annually up to £27,180 by the fourth year.

The service operates 24 hours a day, six days a week, across early and late shifts, requiring flexible availability. Shift schedules are planned 12 weeks in advance, supporting personal planning. Part-time options are available but must be for full working days; partial daily shifts are not offered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Escort detainees safely within the court environment, including courtroom transfers and cell movements.
  • Supervise detainees throughout court hearings to uphold security and safety protocols.
  • Handle sensitive situations with discretion and maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Ensure detainee welfare by facilitating access to food, drink, and regular wellbeing checks.
  • Monitor and manage detainee behaviour, responding swiftly to any incidents or risks.
  • Conduct necessary searches to preserve a secure setting.
  • Maintain precise records and documentation related to detainee handling.
  • Liaise effectively with court personnel and partner agencies to ensure operations run smoothly.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Applicants from diverse backgrounds are welcomed; a firm dedication to contributing positively is essential.
  • Completion of a comprehensive 5.5-week paid training course with ongoing support from experienced staff is provided.
  • Possession of a full UK driving license (categories B/B1) is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Adequate physical fitness to meet the role's demands.

  • Ability to remain composed and make quick decisions under pressure.
  • Proven confidence in managing behaviours and de-escalating conflicts.
  • Capability to work collaboratively within a team and follow structured procedures accurately.

Additional Information
