Opportunity Overview
Brightflag is undergoing significant growth, having recently launched a multi-product strategy covering E-Billing, Matter Management, and Vendor Management verticals. The company is now focused on developing a platform layer integrating all products. We are seeking our inaugural Principal Technology Product Manager to lead this initiative. You will be responsible for creating the platform functions such as the API framework, MCP server, identity and access management, notifications, reporting, and shared infrastructure relied upon by all vertical product teams.
This role involves partnering closely with engineers and architects to solve complex and technically ambiguous challenges firsthand, rather than delegating them. You will craft scalable platform strategies, manage intake and prioritization to align multiple teams with ambitious goals, and set the technical standards defining quality at Brightflag. Your work will have company-wide impact as it serves all teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and own the product strategy and roadmap for Brightflag’s platform pillar, including API framework, MCP server, identity and access (IDP), notifications, reporting, audit, and AP/PS tooling.
- Serve vertical product teams as internal customers by building and managing an intake and prioritization system to handle competing requests and transparently communicate trade-offs when capacity is limited.
- Lead Brightflag's MCP server strategy from start to finish.
- Collaborate closely with engineering on architecture decisions, sequencing, and assessing build versus buy options, favoring root architectural solutions over quick fixes.
- Define and monitor platform health metrics, such as internal adoption, API reliability and performance, developer onboarding efficiency, incident response, and audit coverage.
- Produce clear technical documentation and API/tool specifications to enable engineers and external developers to integrate without direct assistance.
- Personally engage deeply with challenging and ambiguous technical issues within the platform, rather than delegating upwards or outwards.
- Represent and communicate the platform roadmap and trade-off decisions credibly to vertical team leaders and senior leadership, despite no direct authority over them.
- Adapt team rituals and coaching as AI-assisted engineering accelerates delivery to ensure discovery and outcome validation keep pace with increased speed.
- Co-develop norms for responsible AI-assisted engineering with technical leads and mentor other product managers on fostering effective engineering partnerships.
Required Skills & Experience
- A minimum of 7 years in product management, with significant experience focused on platform, infrastructure, identity/access management, or developer tools/API teams rather than exclusively customer-facing features.
- Solid technical background (computer science, engineering, or equivalent hands-on expertise) enabling credible participation in architectural and protocol discussions. Proficient in reading APIs or MCP specifications and evaluating trade-offs.
- Direct knowledge of identity and access management technologies such as OAuth 2.0/2.1, OIDC, SSO, directory synchronization, and least-privilege access policies, and/or proficiency with API platform concepts including REST design, webhooks, rate limiting, and versioning.
- A strong perspective on API usability, focusing on clear tool or endpoint design down to individual parameters and permission scoping.
- Preference for addressing root cause architectural problems rather than quick patch solutions, even if patches are faster to deliver.
- Ability to operate without a well-defined backlog by creating systems to resolve competing priorities from multiple vertical roadmaps and stakeholders.
- Technical credibility to engage as a genuine peer with software architects and engineers without necessarily coding.
- Intellectual curiosity and comfort with ambiguity, thriving in a pioneering role without an existing playbook.
- Resilience under pressure, accountability for decisions and innovation, and commitment to sustainable work pace for self and team.
Preferred but Not Required
- Experience or exposure to MCP, function calling, and agent tooling, given ownership of MCP server strategy is a key responsibility. A strong interest in these areas is essential even if direct experience is limited.
- Previous work at a multi-product SaaS company is advantageous.
Brightflag Benefits & Culture
- An exceptional opportunity for significant impact and to influence strategic direction.
- Exposure to challenging technical and business problems and an empowering, autonomous environment.
- A supportive, value-driven, inclusive, and friendly team culture.
- A competitive compensation package.
- 25 days annual leave.
- Employer pension contributions.
- Access to Tax-Saver and Cycle-to-Work Schemes.
- Comprehensive health and life insurance, including long-term illness/income protection.
- Fully flexible work location and schedule to support work-life balance.
- Wellbeing program with stipend support.
