Job description

About Rocket Lab

Rocket Lab is a comprehensive space enterprise offering rapid launch services, full spacecraft design and manufacturing, satellite components, and payloads aiming to democratize space access. Our rockets and satellites support critical missions in scientific research, Earth observation, climate change initiatives, national defense, and advanced technology demonstrations.

The Electron rocket ranks as the second most frequently launched U.S. rocket and has successfully deployed over 230 satellites. Concurrently, we are developing Neutron, a new medium-lift reusable launch vehicle intended for larger constellation deployments. Our Space Systems division creates a broad range of satellites and components selected for prestigious NASA lunar and Martian missions, as well as instruments used in the James Webb Space Telescope.

Neutron Program

The Neutron team at Rocket Lab drives the development of the Neutron large launch vehicle and its infrastructure, from structural design and component validation to engine test firing and establishing launch and testing facilities in the U.S. Joining this team means contributing to the maiden launch of this new rocket.

Role Summary

As a Principal Development Engineer, you will lead the design and certification strategy for mechanical structures and mechanisms on the Neutron launch vehicle. This role involves collaboration with engineers and prototyping specialists to ensure the advancement of metallic aerospace structures and related components.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers to evaluate initial designs, conduct trade-off analyses, and devise integrated engineering solutions promptly.
  • Establish and document architectural decisions concerning material choices, specifications, processing controls, inspection protocols, and continuous improvement methods from component through system levels.
  • Design and oversee testing programs to generate databases of metallic material properties.
  • Lead projects involving internal teams and external partners, ensuring timely delivery, adherence to scope, and budget compliance.
  • Participate actively in decision-making processes including design reviews, test preparations, change control, and risk assessment.
  • Identify and resolve engineering challenges proactively to maintain project momentum.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to other engineering personnel.

Candidate Profile

This position suits an experienced multidisciplinary engineer comfortable with ambiguity, eager to contribute across the full lifecycle of a complex aerospace program from concept to launch.

Essential Qualifications

  • Over 8 years in relevant industries such as aerospace, aviation, automotive racing, or defense, focusing on material system design, development, and testing.
  • Expertise in metallic materials, including development, qualification, and performance characteristics.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and foster strong professional relationships.
  • Competence in managing and thriving under tight deadlines and high-pressure conditions.
  • Strong willingness to learn new materials to tackle complex technical problems.

Desirable Attributes

  • Familiarity with aerospace standards for surface treatments, heat treatments, material composition, corrosion, and fracture mechanics.
  • Experience with product lifecycle transitions from prototype to production and knowledge of Siemens Team Center or Infor LN.
  • Understanding of soft materials applied structurally, rapid composite tooling, additive manufacturing, heat treating, machining, and welding of metals.
  • Knowledge of aerospace adhesives, bonding processes, and CAD tools like NX, CATIA, SolidWorks, or Inventor.
  • Experience with quality management systems including change and configuration control.
  • Hands-on experience in composite fabrication, mechanical, or thermal testing.

Employee Benefits

  • Engagement with cutting-edge aerospace technology and innovation.
  • Support for relocation and visa sponsorship.
  • Employee stock purchase options.
  • Access to industry-leading experts for career development.
  • Unlimited complimentary coffee, fresh fruit, and snacks.
