Role Overview

We seek a Principal AI Engineer to lead our AI evaluation team. This position primarily involves steering a high-performing group of engineers and scientists while maintaining hands-on technical involvement in architecture and system design. You will elevate AI/ML engineering standards, synchronize technical strategies across teams, and collaborate closely with Product management.

This role is based in Singapore with an option for Munich.

Key Responsibilities

• Define and own the evaluation framework, determining metrics such as accuracy, reliability, robustness, and data quality to transform research into rigorous methods that withstand scrutiny from customers and regulators.
• Lead the technical strategy for the AIP evaluation engine across various domains including computer vision, LLM/retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), vision-language models (VLM), and emerging AI fields such as agentic and embodied systems.
• Influence the future direction of capabilities by deeply understanding tested systems and customer needs, providing strategic insight to Product on essential evaluation features projected 6–12 months ahead.
• Maintain high engineering standards through solid system design, comprehensive code reviews, and active developer collaboration, stepping into the codebase to resolve blockers and guide architecture.
• Ensure the architectural coherence of the system, document critical architecture decisions, and manage dependencies and coupling to prevent architectural drift.
• Lead and develop a multidisciplinary team of nine engineers and scientists located in Singapore and Munich. Conduct one-on-ones, manage performance and career growth, participate in hiring to strengthen team capacity, and foster a culture of trust and high productivity.
• Oversee delivery execution by translating the roadmap into actionable plans, sequencing tasks, and coordinating cross-team dependencies. Reports to the CTO and liaises with Product management to balance workload, scope, and resources for consistent roadmap delivery.

Candidate Profile

• Minimum 7 years of professional experience in software engineering including roles as a technical lead or engineering manager, responsible for shipping and maintaining production-grade systems.
• Solid expertise in machine learning, data science, or statistics sufficient to design and justify evaluation metrics and guide applied research and development.
• Proficiency in Python for backend development and data pipeline creation.
• Demonstrated leadership managing engineering teams, including ownership of architecture decisions and establishing engineering quality standards.
• Experience in people management or clear ability to assume managerial responsibilities.
• Strong aptitude in architectural judgment—handling coupling, leading system migrations, and maintaining system coherence through architectural decision records and dependency management.
• A leadership approach focused on team growth, scalability, and preservation of conceptual integrity.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, comfortable working towards defined quarterly objectives.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with data quality tools or AI evaluation/testing/assurance in domains like LLM/RAG, agentic AI, or computer vision.
• Familiarity leading development involving typed frontend technologies such as TypeScript and React.
• Experience with data-heavy pipelines using columnar or lakehouse formats (e.g., Parquet, Iceberg) and query engines like DuckDB.
• Knowledge of containerized or serverless computation frameworks such as Nuclio.
• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes and Helm for production deployments.
• Expertise in GPU/CUDA infrastructure for large-scale model inference.
• Track record of managing platform migrations involving live enterprise customers focusing on auditability and backward compatibility.
• Contributions to research in AI model evaluation, benchmarking, or AI safety and assurance.
