Job description
Position Overview
As an enlisted member of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), Postal Clerks deliver comprehensive postal services to CAF personnel and their families at various military bases and establishments.
Primary Duties
- Manage the entire mail cycle including receipt, dispatch, and delivery of correspondence.
- Operate postal tracing services to track mail movement.
- Ensure security protocols for mail, post office facilities, cash, postal valuables, and sensitive equipment are strictly followed.
- Prepare and distribute bills of lading for mail sent via road, rail, sea, or air both domestically and internationally.
- Operate financial counters at postal offices adhering to Canada Post regulations and directives.
- Conduct financial accounting and auditing tasks within military postal offices.
- Type routine correspondence, forms, and official documents.
- Use office machinery such as calculators, photocopiers, computers, and postage meters efficiently.
Work Environment
Postal Clerks serve across the Royal Canadian Navy, Army, and Royal Canadian Air Force within Canada and overseas. Although typically based in postal offices, they may also work aboard ships, in temporary operational unit postal offices, or mobile postal vans.
Regular Force members receive training then are assigned to bases with postings that may require relocation during their careers. Primary Reserve Force members work part-time within their reserve unit, generally one night weekly and some weekends, without mandatory relocations.
Entry Requirements
- No prior work experience or specific career skills are needed; recruiters assist candidates in assessing suitability.
- Minimum educational qualification is a completion of Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec; foreign education credentials may be accepted.
Training
Initial training involves Basic Military Qualification at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, covering core military skills and physical fitness standards.
Afterwards, six weeks of postal-specific training occurs in Trenton, Ontario, covering mail handling, safeguarding, and postal laws and regulations.
Additional specialized skill development opportunities include financial accounting and auditing, instructional techniques, and advanced courses in personnel management and postal administration, all contingent on performance and potential.
