Job description
Position Overview
Join Mackay Regional Council's Parks and Environment team as a Nursery Officer in a permanent full-time capacity. This role is suited for plant enthusiasts passionate about native species and community environmental impact. Whether you are new to the field or possess extensive horticultural experience, contribute to cultivating plants that enliven parks, gardens, libraries, and community spaces.
Key Responsibilities
- Propagate and cultivate plants utilized throughout Mackay Regional Council properties such as Botanic Gardens, Queens Park, Orchid House, libraries, and natural vegetation projects.
- Conduct nursery upkeep including material and stock ordering, soil and irrigation testing, pest and weed control, and maintaining facilities.
- Operate and maintain small plant machinery and power tools related to nursery tasks.
- Collect, categorize, and store seeds appropriately.
- Keep thorough records regarding plant production, seed storage, and volunteer activities.
- Ensure adherence to Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme Australia (NIASA) standards.
- Utilize digital platforms for communication, data management, and coordinating work orders.
- Mentor and support volunteers and community groups such as Friends of the Gardens and SGAP, maintaining updated volunteer records.
- Develop and nurture relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Assist in designing promotional content and actively engage in open days, workshops, and community events to highlight nursery functions.
- Complete scheduled tasks and contribute to specific projects.
- Support ongoing implementation and refinement of nursery policies and procedures.
- Adhere to workplace health and safety policies ensuring a safe environment for colleagues, volunteers, and the public.
Qualifications and Experience
- Possess General Construction Induction Training certification.
- Hold a Queensland 'C' Class driver's license or equivalent interstate.
- Completed Certificate III in Horticulture, Rural Operations, Production Nursery, Nursery Operations, or a related discipline, corresponding to Level 3-4.
Desirable Qualifications
- Medium Rigid (MR) driver's license.
- Accreditation to operate a Pole Saw (FWCO23238).
- Chemical Accreditation (AQF3).
