Role Summary
The role of the Mud Man involves the management and upkeep of drilling fluids, critical for maintaining drilling efficiency and well integrity. This position requires continuous monitoring, preparation, and adjustment of mud properties to align with the drilling program requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and maintain drilling fluids as specified by the approved drilling plan.
- Regularly monitor parameters such as mud density, viscosity, filtration, pH, and solids content.
- Perform routine mud testing and ensure timely, accurate recording of results.
- Support the mixing and handling of mud-related chemicals and additives.
- Track mud volume levels and flag any unexplained deviations.
- Oversee mud system components including tanks, pumps, shakers, desanders, desilters, and centrifuges.
- Assist with conditioning and treatment processes for drilling fluids.
- Ensure proper storage, labeling, and handling of chemicals and additives.
- Maintain sufficient inventory of mud chemicals and materials.
- Report any abnormal mud qualities or well conditions immediately to supervisors.
- Support identification of well-control indicators to prevent operational hazards.
- Collaborate closely with drillers and the drilling team on mud-related operational needs.
- Maintain equipment related to the mud system, reporting any defects for repair.
- Ensure cleanliness and orderliness of the mud plant and chemical storage areas.
- Follow procedures related to chemical handling, environmental protection, and health & safety.
- Participate actively in safety talks, drills, and relevant training sessions.
- Maintain comprehensive reporting and documentation concerning mud operations and inventory management.
Qualifications and Experience
- Possession of a Bachelor's degree or Higher National Diploma in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, or a related field preferred.
- Certifications related to drilling fluids or mud engineering are advantageous.
- Experience working with drilling fluids on rigs is essential for professional roles.
- Understanding of drilling fluid systems and principles of well control is required.
- Valid safety and medical certifications for offshore work are necessary where applicable.
- Strong analytical skills paired with problem-solving abilities are important.
